Hi,

I posted a thread about 5 weeks ago regarding a fast heartbeat each time I injected my insulin, I got a couple of replies one from another addisons person like myself who had changed to porcine insulin, I went to my GP she didn't think they did it any more, but eventually found it, I started last week and now no fast heartbeats, so thanks for the help. I think my GP told me if my morning sugars were high to change the does in the morning and visa versa, is that correct. My morning readings now are fine at 6, but I am struggling with the day time ones which seem to be about 9 or 10, I take my hydro cortisone during the day and thyroxine which I think makes higher blood sugar. To get the day ones down do I give myself a higher dose at tea time.?

Thanks

lesley

Hi Lesley

Hydrocortisone will put your blood sugar up so you will probably need more insulin in your morning dose to cover that.

Are you taking isophane, neutral or both?

Glad that the porcine insulin is working for you.

Hi Lesley,
I am the other addisonian :) I use bovine not porcine though :)
You haven't actually said what insulin you are using, is it neutral or Isophane?
If Isophane then most use a split dose as it doesn't claim to be a 24 hour insulin.
Your HC should be split to mimic your body. so if you take 25HC during the day you need 15 when your wake and 10 at lunch time.

Hi thanks for replying I take the 30/70 isophane today my morning was 4.9 lunch 4.5 but tea time 9 which is high for me but I don't know how to get that down at the mo I take 40 mgs of hydro as I took 10 ,gs of prednisolone, doing 20/10/10 I will try and get to 30 when I feel ok just reduce bit by bit. I am taking about 34 of the porcine night and morning my GP worked out I was using 70 in sort and long acting insulin. Also is there a correct time to inject I have been doing before breakfast and before tea.

Thanks again for your help

Lesley

Was there any reason your GP gave you the mix?
You would be a lot better off having the insulin's separate so that you can carb count and control the adjustment of basal and bolus.

I guess the pre-mixed insulin would be better for a pen, but I agree it would give more flexibility to have separate neutral and isophane which you could draw up in a syringe (like we did in the good old days ;) )

Hi thanks again my GP gave me the mix after looking it up as she didn't think they did it any more so she checked about a pen and what would go in it . Do they do a long and short acting which u inject with a syringe ? The past few days have been ok and my numbers have been around 6/ 5.6 and 6.5 but I tend to know what I am eating but I wonder how I gown on when I am abroad and eating out as you don't know what you are going to eat.

What you are using as a mix can be obtained in separate cartridges or vials. If you have the vials then you need a syringe for administration and then can mix the basal and bolus in the same syringe thus saving yourself extra pokes.
You can also use the neutral for MDI purposes thus injecting at lunch time to cover carbs do remember that the neutral has a duration of anything between 6 and 8 hours so mind you don't end up stacking the insulin.
