porridge for type 1

After reading another topic about porridge it seems to be working well with people with type 2 but how is it for people with type 1?

As a Scot it pains me to say it, but porridge is a disaster for me. It raises my blood sugar too high and for too long.

I'm type 1 on Humalog bolus which is rapid acting. Even so it can't act quickly enough to deal with the starches in porridge. Humalog also does most of its work in the first couple of hours after injecting, whereas oatmeal can still be releasing sugars after this point.

Eggs for me every time!

All the best,

Hi shadow

How are things going with you?

I don't eat porridge anymore because I found it quite difficult to get my BS nice and low again afterwards...

I tend to find it's ok, as long as you don't go mad on the portion size.

Provided I shoot enough Novorapid (that godsend of insulins) it seems fine - usually about 6u.

Yeh everything seems to be going a bit better now.
Well I had porridge this morning then come break time started to feel a bit of a hypo coming on so had a packet of crisps and had two dextrose tablets. Then before lunch time when I got to do my BG test it was 4.3 so I was pleased.

That sounds good, shadow!

Better than when you were posting before :D

Did you decide what to do about injecting at school?

Claire

Weirdly for me porridge is alright if i don't associate it with somthing that has fat in it providing of course that i match the amount of insulin to the food intake. If i ever have peanut butter and bread with it at breakfast then i will be too high for too long. I guess it's because the fat makes the digestion even longer.
