Not sure if i have diabetes yet i am waiting for results of a fasting blood test. The first blood test i had done was an hour after i had eaten porrige for breakfast .does anyone know if this would affect my results which doc said was 8. As you can gather i do not know anything about diabetes. Would be gratfull for replies

Hiya

I find Porridge is the best thing for me to have for breakfast and usually have a blood sugar of around 4.5 2hrs after so I tend to eat this every morning now!

I would not say your sugar was high though as the range is 8 and under. And I have always been told to test 2 hours after eating...

Good luck.

Annette,

Anything you eat that contains carbohydrates will increase your blood sugar level. Whether it will do this quickly or slowly depends on whether the carbohydrate is low or high GI. Porridge is medium GI and its maximum affect in your blood sugar would probably be apparent around 1½ hours after eating. At one hour the sugar level would still be rising and at two hours it would be falling.

I wouldn't put too much faith in that first reading because it wasn't taken in a "controlled" situation. The fasting test will give a better indication, and your doctor may also arrange for an HBA1C test, which shows what your sugar levels have been like over the previous 90 days.

Depends, perhaps, what was on the poraqe. I add wheatgerm only, no salt. On the other hand my son adds a copious amount of chocolate spread and perhaps a sliced banana.

thanks for replys. Is glucose results the same as sugar(sorry to be so thick but find it confusing)as doctor said it was high (8) I had nothing on porridge. I also have gingivitas(cannot spell)dont know if both are connected as really take care to clean teeth properly

Funny I also had Bleeding Gums and nose before was I diagnosed T2
mid jan 2008
A few weeks later with metformin and gliclazide this has cleared up 100%

Other things also back to near normal are
My eye sight
No cramps in my legs
No sweating
More energy

Metformin has at last stopped making me feel sick

The results of my fasting blood test.
Fasting 19.5
2HRS+glucose drink 29.3

I believe over 7 for Fasting and anything over 11 2hrs+ after your glucose drink
Is a positive for Diabetes
well thats what my DSN told me ?

I’m OK
Its all the others
First HbA1c 11.9

Blood glucose is the correct term, but people often refer to the same thing as 'blood sugars'.

8 is slightly high.

Non-diabetics should have a range of between 4-7 and this is what diabetics should be aiming for at all time...

However, this isn't dangerously high and hopefully if it's been caught early you can work on your diet and exercise and get back to within normal rangers.

8 - an hour after eating porridge - frankly I would be more than happy.

8 - as a fasting - pretty annoyed

So Annette - see what the fasting result is - and ask GP to do HBA1C - much more relevant. If you can test yourself - take the before eating result and the 2 hours after eating result. Both should preferably be less than 7.

My mum's GP scared the life out of her by doing a BG test about 1 hour after her breakfast of porridge and a large glass of cranberry juice. When the fasting test was done, everything was ok

All the best

Yes, porridge would definitely affect your one-hour level. In fact, that's one of the reasons I no longer eat it for breakfast.
Good luck with the fasting test.

Interesting.

What are you one hour after breakfast? I'm one of those awkward types that sometimes does more than I'm told to. Or less.

Annette,

Let us know the fasting test results when you get them.

<br />Alan, after an hour my levels are still below 8 so I am sticking with eating it as it seems to be working well for me!

When I first went to see the diabetes nurse, before I was on insulin, and she tested my BS after eating porridge and some fruit I was 28! But I am type 1 not type 2 and that makes a big difference!

Have just had fasting test results 6.5 have been asked to see doc. Do you think this is diabetes or not, Just so i am ready for what she says. The results before were 8 but that was not fasting

I'd have been more than happy with a fasting of 6.5 mmol/L !He may ask you to do a glucose tolerance test. You fast and he takes blood, just like your fasting test. Then you have to drink a controlled amount of glucose and they test you 2 hours later by taking more blood. If the blood glucose on the second test is high, over 11.1mmol/L then they say you are diabetic. If it is between 7.8-11 mmol/L they say it is impaired glucose tolerance but they tend to treat as diabetes as well.

Knowledge is the key to control

I DIDN'T KNOW IF PORRIDGE WAS GOOD OR NOT AS ONLY JUST FOUND OUT I AM TYPE 2. I FIGURED THAT AS IT WAS OAT BASED AND NOT WHEAT IT MAY BE OK.......BUT BEWARE ONLY USE THE OATS FROM A BIG BOX NOT THOSE LITTLE SACHETS WITH THE NICE ADDED FLAVORS, BERRIES AND NUTS ETC. IF YOU READ THE ADDED SUGARS IN THEM YOU WILL GET A FRIGHT. I FIND THE ORGANIC HOME PRODUCED OATS FOM A SUPERMARKET BEGINING WITH M ARE REALLY GOOD CREAMY AND TASTY WITH OUT ADDING ANYTHING TO THEM.

I can't eat even the best wholegrain, minimally processed, pure oats - even 30 grams still pushes my BG levels way too high.
