Possible Diabetes

Hi my doc thinks i may have diabetes and wants me to check the blood glucose levels before and after i eat for a couple of weeks so he can see whats happening. Im slightly confused as i thought your levels are supposed to rise after you eat but mine are dropping slightly. Is this normal? They are not dropping very low but sometimes they are the same as before i have eaten and sometimes its slightly lower. At other times they do rise to a higher level but for this first week i have noticed they are mostly the same or just slightly lower. Im guessing this means im not diabetic as the levels should be rising after i eat. Any advice would be great.

Hi welcome to the forum :)

Not having a rise is only part of it, that’s a good thing in itself but doesn’t mean you don’t have diabetes. Are you testing immediately before and 2 hours after first bite?

If so what are your before and after numbers? That’s an important part of it too

What was it that made your doctor think you may have diabetes? Did he do a HbA1c test or a finger prick test? Do you know what those numbers were?

We can’t tell you if you are diabetic or not as we aren’t medical professionals but we can comment on what we think of your numbers in general

In addition to @lovinglife's questions, what is your current diet? Are you eating normal levels of carbohydrate, or are you on a low carb diet?

Reason I ask is that on low carb diets, particularly more restrictive ones like keto, it's possible to get a lower BG reading 2hrs after a meal compared to your pre-meal reading. I can do this with a cheese omelette, but I'm still a type 2 diabetic.

If you're eating carbohydrate based meals and getting the result you are, best to talk to a doctor, as it could have a number of implications.

Most people these days are diagnosed by an HbA1c test. This produces a figure given in mmol/mol. Normal (where most non-diabetic people are) is in the range 38-42. You will automatically be diagnosed as being T2 diabetic with a blood glucose over 48. The gap between 42 and-48 is what's become known as "pre-diabetes" - nat a diagnosis as such but a clear sign that something isn't right. I had a good number of symptoms at this stage.

So I'm a bit baffled as to why your doc has asked you to do fingerprick tests rather than just doing an A1c test.
