Hi all I had a blood sugar reading of 90 a few weeks ago the doctor told me it was supposed to be 20…. Not very informative at all.? Can anyone decipher this? I can’t find what I’m looking for on Google. I have no idea what this means? Except for it’s not good. I am going for a blood test tomorrow with a nurse at gps they said they test past 3 months blood sugar level? I’m just so out my depth and I really don’t have a clue and I’m afraid. And advice or reassurance would be greatly received x

Are you sure those are the numbers your GP quoted?
The 90 makes sense if it was the 3 month average test (hba1c), but a normal hba1c is below 42, not 20.

Please ask your nurse for more information on your results tomorrow!
And then come back to us with all your questions, people will be happy to help. :)

I promise that’s what he said. It was picked up on a test for something else. I go for the one you just mentioned tomorrow…. And yes that makes sense about asking nurse ..I’m just highly anxious and thanks I need to start to familiarise myself with the terminology… x

Hi @Linskic are you in the UK? I don't have a clue what units your blood glucose was measured in, as '20' isn't a number that I recognise as being good, sorry.

Sounds like you are having your HbA1c measured tomorrow, the results might come back as mmol/mol or as a % - have a look at my footer for some examples and have a read here: https://www.diabetes.co.uk/hba1c-test.html

I would love to say 'don't panic' as you don't need to, but I know you will, (I did), but once you get some results you will know where you stand and what the next steps will be. I totally empathise with the worry you must be feeling, it's natural.

If you have been ill, had covid, been on medication like antibiotics or steroids or had any jabs etc. in the last 3 months, mention this to the nurse as they can all temporarily raise your blood glucose and skew the results. She/he might not know what to do with this info, but there is evidence that glucose levels can be effected by more than 'diabetes'.

Make sure you come back here for the words of the wise (and me) and let us know how you got on. Results usually come back within 24hrs depending on where you are, so you should not have to wait too long, and if you are in the UK, and already registered with the NHS App and/or Patients Know Best you will be able to see them as soon as they are available.

Good luck :)

If it was a glucose test, not a hba1c test, the numbers 90 and 20 really don't make sense at all.
So please take a deep breath, you'll see the nurse tomorrow and then you'll know more, and that's early enough. ;)

Thanks so much lovely, your gracious response.. the way you wrote really helped soothe and made me feel less isolated and alone .such gratitude. Xx off to gp see what’s going on… oh and thanks for reminding me about the nhs app … I looked it up and I’ve already been given an appointment for diabetic nurse appointment at end of month? Is this usual ? I mean it’s like they are basically telling me I already have it.

Hi. Yes it's quite usual to see the diabetes nurse if you are having a diabetes blood test. It could just be that you are pre-diabetic and need some diet advice etc.

Unfortunately the numbers indicated I a type 2. I didn’t see the diabetic nurse to get my bloods taken … so no information advice or explanation. Just given numbers and that was it … have an appointment at end of month with specialists nurse. See what’s what.

Hi @Linskic did you get your HbA1c back already/on the App? Any nurse can draw the blood, it's the explanations of the results that need someone more specialised, and an 'end of month appointment' to me is more promising that an urgent phonecall. Hang in there x
