The puzzle that is Asperger syndrome that I still can't fit together.
Hi All!

I was wondering if someone could advise me about Metformin? I currently take 3x500mg daily and was wondering how long they take to start lowering Blood glucose levels as I'm not convinced they're helping much as my levels have been creeping up rather than down since diagnosis even though I have cut carbs down to about 100g(as much as I can without it affecting my colostomy) a day my last 2 readings 2 1/2 hours after my lunch of noodles were 'HI' followed 5 minutes later by 31.3
I'm seeing the practice nurse{sigh} friday so do you think I need to ask her to review my Meds? or am I just worrying over nothing?

No you are not worrying about nothing.

If you have cut your carbs to 100g and are getting 'HI' and 31.3 then you need to see a doctor and not just the nurse. Did they ever test your urine for ketone's? I don't want to sound alarmist and I'm not an HCP but if you have genuinely cut your carbs, gone on metformin and your BG's are still rising and at the levels you've reported then it could be a Type 1 indicator. If you get no joy with seeing your gp go to casualty instead.

I am sure if anyone significantly disagrees they'll tell us.

Paulie... if you do not have the means to test for keytones then please contact your GP or out of hours GP now.. a reading of 31.3 is dangerous if accompanied by keytones and you would need medical intervention.

I wouldn't wait. I think that you should head to A&E now. Can you get someone to drive you?

I had to go in hospital, put on a IV, injected with insulin for a reading of 26. I was suffering bad with symptoms and had ketones in me wee then. bigfatpaulie must be suffering. :eh:

Thanks all for your replies and honesty too!
Sorry for the late reply-I felt rough so I drank loads of fluids and didn't bother with my evening meal either and had an early night.I've just tested my blood now,20 hours after last eating and it's now 15.1mmol/l thank god!!
I'm going to buy some ketone urine sticks this morning and if I test positive i'm going to get urgent medical advice and if negative I'm going to see GP because this doesn't seem right.(When I asked the nurse on diagnosis about dangerous levels she laughed and told me "Don't worry, you're only type 2,your BG will never hit 18 even, never mind danger levels so DO NOT TEST YOUR BLOOD AT HOME!!!" I now feel angry at her,not only for her rubbish diet plan but for having this 'One size fits all' attitude when it comes to newly diagnosed diabetics which is bloody dangerous I think!

Did they at least have a good reason to think it's T2 (rather than the usual practise of diagnosing T2 when it's not obviously a T1 in DKA or a child)?

Haven't been told much at all really apart from the Nurse telling me that only children and teenagers get type 1 so I believed her but now after doing research I now know that people can get T1 or Lada at any age and I'm sure there's lots of members on here who have.
I'm very grateful for finding this informative site and forum as I feel I have been swept under the carpet by the Nurse practicioner :(

I know exactly how you feel. I'm being tested next week for lada. My DN seems to be so overloaded with patients she comes across like she will say anything just to get you out and the next one in. It makes me feel awkward to ask anything. I have managed to bypass her now and speak to my doctor or ask here on the forum.
