I have been getting a lot of almost constant upper abdominal pain and I am already on Rabeprazole for possible gastritis.I started glucophage about 3 months ago and increased the dose over 4 weeks to my present dose of 2000mg.Could my much worsening stomach pain be related to the glucophage....I know metformin can cause diahorrea etc but could it worsen upper abdominal problems.
I am seeing my GP on Monday and a surgeon friend thinks I need an endoscopy and ultrasound.
Anyone else experienced stomach ulcers etc on metformin/glucophage
I am also eating low carb about 50g per day so my fat intake is raised too but cholesterol is good.

I was on a generic extended release metformin for around 6 months and it gave me bleeding gastritis and low ferritin levels due to the occult bleeding. I also get extreme upper GI discomfort any time I take Nexium. After being diagnosed via endoscopy, I quit metformin and had ferritin injections to restore my levels. They gave me Nexium but I could only take it for a couple of days due to the discomfort.

Hi. Interesting. First time I've seen a post implicating Metformin in gastric problems as opposed to well-known bowel problems. It's quite possible of course. If your weight isn't too bad and your sugar control reasonable then it may be worth cutting back or stopping the Met after discussion with the GP. It never has a great effect and not worth it causing side effects.

Further note to my post above...my blood results today we're normal apart from a raised eosinphill white count which could suggest infection or allergic response ?.Stomach pain is a little better this afternoon but my Rabeprazole has increased from 20mg a day to 30mg twice a day.Seeing GP tomorrow. Thanks for the replies.
Weight wise I could do with losing 2stone but despite quite a strict low carb plan and the glucophage the weight loss over about 8 weeks has only been about 3 pounds. Very disappointing. As you say the metformin doesn't do much for my sugars...I feel it's the low carb diet that works..Sugars at present are
7.6 on waking and between 6 and 9 pre/post meals. My post prandial sugars have been in the 15s and its only minimal carbs that keep them this low.Am struggling at times really

Just a couple of thoughts - ulcers are mainly cause by helicobacter pylori and, once found, are usually easily treated with antibiotic medication. If the pain is to the right of your upper abdomen it could also be gallstones or even fatty liver. These are only my own thoughts and experiences as to what the causes could be. Sorry you're feeling so unwell with it all and I hope you get it sorted soon. Jan x
