Hi

hubby & I have got the green light for baby-making and one of the main areas that's worrying me is how to get BG after one hour of eating to 7.8 or below, without hypos following swiftly behind.

I've been on a pump now for 2 months, and sorted my basal and bolus ratios. Does being on a pump make achieving the one-hour readings easier?

Any advice/experiences you could share would be appreciated. Feeling a bit daunted at the mo.

The +1 hour target is a tough one. You are going to need to eat foods that are (for you) low GI. The alternative approach is to give some or all of the bolus dose ahead of the meal. But this can be risky re hypos. Definitely don't increase the insulin dose, that will only result in hypos.

If practical, you could try splitting the meal: bolus for the entire meal, and eat half of it now and the other half an hour later.

I found that I needed a small snack between meals.

While pregnant I stuck to what I knew food wise.

And don't worry too much about a few high readings.

Sadly, it became quite clear to me, that there were some foods which I just had to avoid. I tried not to eat more than 60g of carbs at a time, and even though this doesn't seem much, I had to 'graze' more during the day, rather than have 3 mega meals.
Cereal was a no no and foods such as pasta were avoided as much as possible as my insulin worked too fast, and I ended up hypo then mega high.
My body was more prone to running high in the morning, and it was as though it just didn't 'wake up'. I'm not on a pump, but I have to inject at least 30mins before my toast , that way, my bloods would be roughly in the target range after 1 hr. if I didn't do this, I was still about 12 hours later. During the day, I didn't have this problem.
I didn't want to be too strict during my pregnancy, but I had to in the end, and I really learnt how different foods were often to blame first, rather than the amount of medication.
