Hello everyone,
I have been getting used to testing on waking and before and after meals and think in general my results are encouraging, but after one meal my BG went from 4.4 (pre-prandial) to 6.9 after 1 hour, then at 2 hours it was 5.7. I have had similar results on one other occasion (4.8 - 7.2 - 6.1). My question is whether a spike like that at the 1 hour mark is concerning if it is down quite a bit after 2 hours?
Thank you!

It depends what you ate. Carbs, no carbs, fast acting carbs, slower acting carbs, and how much fat. Or combinations of these.

If the meals were low carb and fats, it may show your first response insulin is a bit weak, but if you had carbs it may show normal responses.

On one occasion it was 2 small pieces of sourdough toast and butter (I bake a lot of bread - or used to! - so wanted to see if I could still tolerate it), the other meal it was a shepherd’s pie with mashed swede/potato on top so carbs were involved both times.

I would call the results "not bad" . At the beginning of my journey, with anything in the 7s at an hour I would have tested again at 90 minutes to try and catch the peak, and anything in the 6s or above at 2 hours I would have continued testing at regular intervals to see how long it took to come back down. When experimenting with additional carbs it pays to know the full story. However, I was quite obsessive and determined to keep within my personal target of 4 to 7 at all times. I did not always succeed, and still don't!

Thank you @Bluetit1802 . So is the peak the thing to keep an eye on, whether it appears at, before or after 2 hours?

Thanks again, that’s useful info.

Your levels are normal - I don't think that you need to be at all concerned - it just confirms that if you eat carbs you will see a rise in BG commensurate with the amount eaten.
That’s reassuring, thank you, I have been cutting down a lot on carbs, with some meals as carb free as possible, but still including small amounts of carb-y food at others. I’m hoping that I can continue to have lowish levels of carb without running into trouble!

If your fasting BG and your pre-meal BGs are good (and those 2 you quoted are very good) then something is working as it should, and there is no need for concern. It is when those times start to trend upwards that you may need to tweak things. (And I mean trend - not just an odd blip here and there). I don't test my meals now., although I do use a Libre part time) All I test are my FBG, before evening meal, and bedtimes. As long as those remain good, I am not overly concerned as I am over 5 years along this road.

So far my FBG readings range from 4.6 to 5.3, and pre-meal ones are 4.4-5.6. This is over the last 10 days. I’m keeping track of the numbers in a spreadsheet (I do like a spreadsheet!) :)
