Post op BG readings

I was diagnosed wth T2 last year and have been using diet and exercise to keep my levels between 6-8. I had a total hysterectomy 7 weeks ago (including a post op infection 3 weeks on resulting in a week of anti-biotics) and am alarmed to find my average bg level is now about 12. I know infection can increase bg levels but as I have been free of infection for 4 weeks I would have thought my levels would have come down by now. I am also obviously not exercising much at present which I guess isn't helping.

My question is, does anyone else have experience of this kind of problem and if so, do levels return to normal once exercise is resumed? I am due for my yearly check up next week and have been told if my levels are still high I will need to start medication. I'm sure my hcp will understand my problems, but don't want to be railroaded into taking more meds (I am on statins and Ramapril for cholestral and bp which are now under control). Any help or info would be appreciated.

Post Op can have effects on your Bg levels, also the type of Op coupled with the use of certain antibiotics can have a detrimental effect too. Your Endocrine system will need a little time to settle down.

As the review is in the future.......why not postpone it till you are a lot better controlled. I did the same after anti-Cancer treatment a little while ago and was pleasantly surprised to see the HbA1c had dropped when I thought it would have risen because of many high Bg levels. :)

Thanks for that. I knew the antibiotics/infection would have a bearing on my bg levels and that the op would have thrown things out too (I had been daignosed with endometrial cancer hence the need for surgery) but was hoping things would have settled down a bit now.

I think your suggestion of postponing for a few weeks would help as obviously once I go back to work and can start exercising a bit more things should (hopefully) get back to normal. Sitting around doing nothing for 7 weeks hasn't helped at all although I have been carefully watching what I eat.

The last thing I want to do is start taking more meds unless I really really have to.
