Post Op Sugar Levels

Hi everyone,

I'm a Type 2 and had a procedure last week where I was given an epidural and some injections to my spine (also one to my elbow whilst I was out). My Hba1C isn't great at 9 (in old school values) but my fasting sugars are almost always between 5 and 7.

Since the procedure I've struggled to get my sugars down to single figures - just wondering whether anyone else has experienced the same and how long it lasted for?

Many thanks
Seqan

Hi there, I've had quite a few operations in the last few years and have experienced the same thing whilst in hospital, to the point where the consultant had to prescribe me an extra 10u of a different kind of insulin (think it was novo rapid where I normally have Humalog) to be injected every few hours. My blood sugars were ranging from 16 to over 22 for a good few days. It's very frustrating and nobody seemed to know why it happened every time I was in hospital. I guess there were many factors including not being very mobile(I had hip replacements) and also stress. Oh and the rubbish food ;) I also find that pain raises my blood sugar like nothing else!!
All the best

Thanks for replying. It's been nearly 2 weeks since my procedure but still no sign of going back to normal. I havènt been taking any painkillers but I thought my pain threshold was quite low - maybe it's pain related?

Take care
Sean
