Hi All
1st time on here so hope I get things right

I'm early 70,s and have had Type 2 for 9 years. I believe I have successfully controlled this with a sensible diet. On a couple of my 6 month checks it has been suggested I start on Metaformin but when I queried if essential told "no" so decided to wait until necessary. I have however been taking medication for high blood pressure and Ace Inhibitor.

2 weeks ago I has surgery for knee replacement and everything has gone haywire. Blood pressure went low and stayed there and blood glucose more than doubled. (Previously I have been relying on 6 monthly checks only, which were steady)

Hospital discharged me with a suggestion to temp. discontinue blood pressure treatment to see what happened. After 4 days I felt most peculiar in the mornings, dizzy, nausia etc so contacted GP

I now am checking bloods which are still very erratic and high, although BP seems to have leveled out ok

My purpose for this post is therefore to find out if this sort of reaction is normal after surgery, and will it correct or am I faced with treatment etc for type 2 from now on, Some people have indicated this often happens but there is an awful lot of "hear say" going on and medics seem a bit vague.

I'm sure someone will be able to help

Thanks

sorry i,ve never had surgery since being diagnosed with type2,
hopefully other members might be able to help

I'm not sure about how it is with T2 but I am T1 and I've had 3 surgeries in the last 8 years and each time my blood sugar levels have gone haywire for a while. Needed lots of extra insulin for a while.

I'm sure there'll be some other T2s along shortly to respond. Hope you're feeling better really soon

Hi!

I'm T2 and had major spine surgery last year. My BS levels went from 6 - 7 to the mid twenties before settling back to normal within a couple of weeks. I also had my gallbladder removed 6 weeks ago and my BS levels increased again, though not as bad as before. This time I was advised by my GP to increase my Insulin dose to help it get back under control, which it did fairly quickly.

Hi, I have just had hip replacement surgery on 14th August and since then my BG levels have been much higher than normal . I was monitored closely in hospital and they always said it's fine but from an average of 4.8 to 5.1 I am now getting readings in the 7's and 8's !
I have stopped taking the tablets I left hospital with and only take my diabetes medication and blood pressure tablets plus clopidogral blood thinner all of which I took before operation. I just hope in time it settles down to the old numbers !

Hi @mickeynnob and welcome.

I did not experience elevated blood glucose after major abdominal surgery early this year. I was on Metformin at the time though. I think sometimes the trauma of the surgery, and of course the hospital food, can cause spikes in blood glucose. I also had blood pressure medication changed a year ago, as sometimes they can affect blood glucose. Maybe you need a medication review?

It is still early days in your post op recovery though, so maybe things will settle again soon. I hope so. Keep posting and let us know how you get on.
