Potassium & Insulin Resistance

Hi all.

My wife & I are both pre-Type 2s'. We've launched into a Keto diet to fight out obesity. After the first few weeks our weight loss is slowing down to a trickle. After much googling I believe we have an "insulin resistance" issue and the solution seems to be a Potassium supplement to enhance our weight loss efforts.

However Potassium supplements come with additional names attached -
Potassium Chloride, Potassium Citrate, Potassium Permanganate, Potassium Chlorate and more.

Which one do I order to solve our insulin/weight-loss bottleneck?

best

Hi @AaLF & welcome to the forum :)

Right off the bat I will admit that I've never come across any studies linking potassium deficiency to weight loss resistance/insulin resistance but I would caution against taking supplements without being tested - potassium can cause issues with heart rhythm. I personally try to get mine from my diet alone.

As to the weight loss, it is perfectly natural for it to slow down somewhat after the initial loss. You may find that some weeks you lose more than others & at times you may even seem to gain a little. Keep an eye on your diet & an eye on your weight loss trends over the longer term & I'm sure you'll see it inch down.

Best of luck.

Welcome @AaLF . When we want to lose weight we all want to lose it quickly, the problem is that our body took time to put in on and needs time to adjust to losing it. I lost just over 2 stone slowly at about 1lb each week over several months. Some weeks my weight lose stalled but my body measurements changed so I knew that something was still going on. I have no sagging skin, very few stretch marks and the loss was easy to control as I approached my target weight, and more importantly to maintain. I now have maintained my weight loss for over two years, I snack on cheese, eat extra thick cream and strawberries for the occasional dessert, indulge in a trip to a carvery for an occasional meal with family or eat out with work colleagues so I do not feel deprived and yet my weight has remained fairly constant - within a couple of pounds - without any effort on my part. Be patient and just keep on doing what you are doing and the weight will come off.

I'm the same I haven't heard of any links but for a ketogenic diet potassium citrate is the recommended kind. Your insulin resistance may very well be improved by fasting. Check out Jason Fung as he's pretty much the modern day revolutionary for fasting in type 2 diabetes with insulin resistance.
