This is my first post.I used to take Prandin for several years and it was extremely effective.Three years ago I developed Polymyalgia Rheumatica and was prescribed Predniolone which I still take8mg daily.reducing slowly.
It was not fully explained or I did not understand that I should expect my BS to rise with Pred. I was prescribed Zicron to see if this would help. It did not. Next Januvia was tried. Again no success and my BS is hovering around 12 to 15 for up to six hours each day.
I had a few Prandin left over and tried them with immediate positive effect. But my GP advises against them, saying they are not Licensed for over 74s. I am 79. I have scoured all the appropriate websites but can find no warnings about this age related prohibition. .
This is very frustrating as although my GP no doubt means well, he is preventing me from feeling well again. I currently spend most of the day in bed, being too tired and sleepy to function normally.

What is the current thinking on Prandin and age? Help!!

Here is the input, according to NICE, taken from the BNF (British National Formulary), which likely to be your UK GP's reference manual: https://www.evidence.nhs.uk/formula...ugs/6123-other-antidiabetic-drugs/repaglinide

Those guidelines certainly support your Doctor's view around your age. There are other studies appearing to consider that sensitivity to this class of medication can increase with age, this increasing the chances of unwanted side-effects/risks. For example: https://www.drugs.com/pro/prandin.html#i4i_geriatric_use_id_4bf26ba7-bfd5-4ce5-8a06-fa66e74a01b0

My feeling is your Doc is more likely to follow the BNF than drugs.com.

I'm sure there must be other options you could be able to try.

Good luck with it all.

Sorry, I can't help you but it seems that your GP has not managed to sort out your high glucose so I would ask for a referral to a diabetic specialist to see about taking Prandin or if he could give you a drug from the same group. It may only be that the drug has not been tested on the over 74s so is therefore not licensed for anyone over that age rather than it not being suitable or safe.
