hi All,

followed this site for a while, now looking for advice from others.

I am recently married, have a pre-conception meeting with a nurse next week which I had to really chase for. My Hba1c is 6.4, I've researched too much (and scared myself with horror stories!) about pregnancy and now just want to know what kind of things they might go over in this appointment. Husband wants to come to, and Ive never shared any of my diabetes appointments with him before, always just been a personal battle, so Im not sure how I feel about this yet, although pleased he's taking an interest. Especially because there is so much preparation involved with lowering hba1c etc. Interesting to hear from anyone who has been through pregnancy recently.

Hi emma,
Welcome to the forum. Loads of type 1's have healthy babies everyday even with mothers who don't have good control so don't stress yourself with horror stories. From talking with my dr's a few years ago i believe the target HbA1c is below 6.5% or 6%, so you're already pretty close there. When you go to your appointment take a list of questions you want to ask I always forget something in important meetings like these. Ask about how their support system works and who should be involved in your care as different areas vary when you get pregnant there's usually a consultant endo and a consultant OBGYN and sometimes a DSN who specialises in pregnancy or a midwife who specialises in diabetes. If you were interested in pumps or CGM's now's the time to note your interest so you can have one set up before you get pregnant. Hi. I had a preconception meeting recently too. My husband came along as I wanted him to so that he could hear what to expect as well. Although he was a little worried afterwards(as my doctor went through all the risks) I was glad he came and got to ask any questions he had too.

They just went through the effect diabetes can have on the baby and the baby's effect on your diabetes control. It's definitely worth going to and I wouldn't worry about it at all.

Also you need to be taking folic acid which is prescribed by you doctor. Good luck!

Thanks ladies.thats very reassuring.I'm sure it will all be fine. I hope husband will come-it's about time he saw all the preparation I'm doing in order to have a healthy baby, it's just weird as having diabetes is such a personal thing for me it will be strange sharing it. Good luck with your conception, it's an exciting time! And in hindsight Laura I should have put this thread in the pregnancy area but I didn't realise it was there-such a massive site!

Emma, not every type1 pregnancy is a scare story, my son was born at 36weeks weighing 6lb 12oz, daughter born at 32 weeks due to a heart problem. But son now 14 and a grotty pre teenager and daughter now 9 going on 16 with attitude lowest hb1ac with both in the 7's plus countless hypos. So take care, pregnacy care has changed so much since I had my 2, but you will get advice to help you and baby through. I did'nt have this forum when I was expecting my 2, so read and inform yourself. As you are lucky and I personally want name and weight :-). Good luck.
