Hi everybody, it is a long time since I have posted on this forum. I did keto for 5 years, and was doing really well, anyway life got a little difficult for me, and I suffered severe depression, and went off Keto. Now doctor has told me that my cholesterol is higher than they would like. I have put on some weight. I have a heart condition, had a heart attack 20 years ago, but my heart is doing well. I would love to go back onto low carb or keto, but am wondering if eating fat off meat, butter, cream, will this make my cholesterol worse. When I was on keto for 5 years, my cholesterol was fine, and pre diabetic under control. My bad, started to eat cake, some chips, bag crisps bread etc...I would love some advice. No use talking to doc, they are still against Keto, even though I did so well on it. Just worried about making my cholesterol worse. The doc wants to increase my Statin. I am on 40 gram at the moment. I don't really want to have the statin increased if I am honest. Any advice would be welcome

Most of the cholesterol in our bodies, we make ourselves. It doesn't come from what we eat, for the most part. Now, if you were hanging out at McDonalds all day, shoveling saturated fats in every hour on the hour, then, yeah, it wouldn't be a good thing... But personally, I think if you regain blood glucose control, the cholesterol doesn't have to be as big a worry.... Mind you, you've already had cardiac issues so i don't know what's going on with that, and even if I did, we can't give actual medical advice, but... I would hit the keto again, as high glucose is damaging to your heart and veins as well, and just you know, eat sensibly... If you think you need a little medical help with the cholesterol, there's always that option. But if keto worked well for you before life happened, you likely could fare well on it again. It doesn't absolutely have to be an either or situation. Why not just give it a go, and test 6 months from now, see where you are then? Is that an option?

It takes a while to see results, with blood glucose and with cholesterol, so... Why not just give it a go and find out? Just my thoughts though.

Good luck!
Jo

Hi Jo, Thank you so much for replying so quickly. I hope that you are well. Funny enough I don't eat Micky dees, lol. My heart appears to be fine, and when I did the keto for 5 years, it did not have any negative affect on my heart. I think basically because |I went off keto, that seems to have caused my cholesterol to go up. I am pre diabetic, but after having full works of blood tests, I have heard nothing yet of my sugar results, only cholesterol results so far. I think that going off the keto and putting on weight, has caused this. The doctor gave me a choice. I could have my statins increased or change my diet. I am choosing going back to keto. It did me no harm before, so should be ok this time. With keto or low carb all was fine. I will take your advice and give it another go. Thank you once again x

I have a feeling going back to low carbing could serve you well. I'm sure if someone here disagrees they'll give a shout, but.... In your shoes, that's the course I would plot.

Whatever happens next though, I hope you're thoroughly aware of this simple fact: You're on here asking for advice because you want to be and feel better than you have been. That's progress, that's a start when depression has been kicking you around for years. Even seriously thinking of making an effort is a positive change, and a welcome one. Be proud of yourself for that.

Hugs,
Jo
