Type 2 Pre diabetic ?

Atnes

Member
I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes just before Christmas - my HbA1c was 129. Three months later it was 64 & then in just under three months it was 44 which my doctor considered to be pre diabetic . I have since come off Metformin & statins as my cholesterol had also become normal. Should I continue to to do regular blood checks & avoid carbohydrates - am I able to eat things like ice cream ?

You have done brilliantly to get that very high HbA1c down to 44 in 6 months. That is excellent, but such a shame to put this at risk if you go back to old ways.

You are still diabetic, even though your current HbA1c is within the pre-diabetic range. An HbA1c of 44 is equivalent to an average of 7.3mmol/l so you are still spending a lot of time above 7.3. Why not eat a carby meal and test it out?

My HbA1c's have been in the prediabetic and non-diabetic range for 3 years but I know exactly what happens if I eat, for example a sandwich bun or a battered fish. If you start eating carbs again you risk getting back to diabetic levels. Pre-diabetes is an "at risk" condition. I have to keep eating to my meter and can't afford to become complacent. That isn't to say I don't experiment. I do, but then trust what my meter tells me.

Thank you for your response that's very helpful !

Hi @Atnes ..
Well done and many congrats on your excellent readings in such a short time .. keep it going and don't let it slip. As @Bluetit1802 has said above, you are still within the pre-diabetic range .. but having said that, you probably do deserve an ice cream (so long as it's a small one)

Well done @Atnes

Great progress.

I am still new to this myself but try to put treats in place so I feel like I am balanced and not fully restricted.

Have you read about or tried Oppo ice cream? I see it discussed on this forum and have a pot in the freezer and had a portion today.( yum yum )
