Hello everyone very confused, upset and anxious. Iam pre diabetic, high cholesterol (controlled to a degree with statin) and now pre diabetic . I am a very healthy eater and aware what I should eat , walk and non alcohol cut out potatoes , bread and am now underweight. I am really confused
Hi jeanlow and welcome to the forums. When you say you're prediabetic, what HbA1c result did you have? It may be that you don't have to do much to come back to normal levels.
Second point - if you're basing the "healthy eating" statement on what the NHS recommends (basically lots of carbohydrate) then you may have an issue. But as you say you've cut out potato and bread, it sounds like you are going for a low-carb way of eating. Is that correct? I found that as well as potato and bread, pasta, pastry, fruit, most root veg, rice and all sugary stuff had to go as well. Most people would add legumes to that list - actually I can manage them OK. Issue is that many foods have carbs "hidden" in them - that goes for a lot of packaged, ready made and processed items.
Thing is, if you are simply dropping a lot of your previous foods, you need to replace them or you'll be low on energy. I eat mainly meat, eggs, dairy and green vegetables these days (plus legumes occasionally). So last night was lamb shami kebabs in low-carb wraps, tonight it's eggs - either omelette or scrambled, probably with salami and cheese. So you might have to up your protein and fat intake a bit to make up for the missing carb.
My cholesterol level hasn't shifted ever - it used to be described as "good", and without it changing now it's "high". I am unconcerned.
I don't want to swamp you with info - but the best bit of advice I can give you is to read around, ask questions, and find out what works for you.
