pre diabetic

Hi, I'm really looking for some advice about what to do now!
I am 47 years old and have been on medication for high blood pressure for approx the last 5 years. At my recent 6 monthly blood test and review it was flagged up that I am pre-diabetic with a blood sugar reading of 6.8 after a 12 hour fasting blood test.
My doctor has advised me to adopt a low GI diet and to lose weight. I was really gutted at the news as for the last 4 months I have been exercising regularly and was hoping all my blood stats and blood pressure would have improved. I currently run approx 3 km five times a week.
Has anyone any advice on diet and on a good list of GI numbers for food? It all seems a bit of a minefield out there and I'm not sure where to look, there seems to be a lot of conflicting advice.
Thank you in advance for any replies.

Hi. Your fasting blood level is slightly elevated and I can understand the GP advising a low-GI diet and losing weight. A low-GI diet is good as it smooths absorption but doesn't necessarily reduce your carb intake which is essential if you are overweight and want to get your bloods down a bit. Many of us would certainly say have low-GI but also control you overall carb intake to a level that helps weight loss. You might want to go for something like 150gm/day or whatever level enables you to achieve gradual weight loss. That means avoiding all added sugar and going more for protein, veg and fat rather than carbs. Do read package labels. Control bread, pasta, potato and so on. There are many web-sites that will give GI ratings for a range of foods; just Google low-GI etc. Having a glucose meter will also help you check which foods affect you most.
