Something that has been playing on my mind.

When I was told I was diabetic few weeks back the GP said that I'd propbably had it for the past 5 years.

I had an operation 3 years ago, would the pre op tests had picked this up?

thanks

soaps on telly and people talking about the characters as if they were real.
They certainly should have.

People who think they are always right and ram their opinions down your throat. No-one knows everything. Those who shout loudest are usually the ones who actually know the least.
I wondered that with myself as I had surgery 6 months before I had my stroke last June. It turns out that my bloods were raised at pre-diabetic levels. No-one told me, but if they had, would I have been motivated to do anything about them? At the time probably not. One thing it did tell me though is that my actual diabetes onset must have been within 6 months of it being diagnosed.

May I ask how did you find out? Did your GP have the records or did you contact the hospital for your notes?

thanks

After my stroke the blood tests were compared. I can't remember if it was the neurologist or my GP who mentioned it, but it is one of the things that stuck in my mind during the very scary week that my stroke was diagnosed.

:( must have been really scary.
I did ring the doctors today to see if they had a copy, dont know who I spoke to as I didnt reconise her voice(Im in a smallish practice so sort of know everyone) but she quickly looked and said she couldnt find any test results but also sort of found it funny/strange that I wanted results from 3 yrs back. I had rung the hospital at the begining of the week and they were really helpful and told me how to apply to get a copy(got to pay). So the forms came today and I (for my own peace of mind otherwise it will bug me) am going to request my test results.

Problem if your BG is raised to 'pre-diabetic' stage at a pre-op check this could be caused just by the stress of facing a pending operation, or the effects of the condition leading to said operation and/or any medication you might be taking to treat the condition leading to said operation... So after the op and recovery period you could have returned to normal blood glucose levels never to have a problem..

Problem with how long an individual had T2 before being diagnosed is a 'could have been' between 5-10 years... Before symptoms appear.. But it's only a could though..

If you look at T1's it's assumed that it happens pretty swiftly, but does it they really don't know at what point the cells starts being destroyed.. My husband said with hindsight his first subtle symptoms started around 8 months before he was diagnosed...

In my case my T1 was picked up so early, that it was thought I was T2!
