Pre Pump Basal

So, I'm starting my pump tomorrow, and am I correct in saying that I half my basal dose?

If so, what's the best way to cope with the rising blood sugars between injecting and being put on the pump. Do you just wake up in the night to inject some rapid acting to bring you back down or what?

I think it depends on what your basal insulin is - Levemir is pretty short and out of your system fast; Tresiba takes a lot longer. I was on split dose Tresiba when I switched , so I took it the evening before my appointment but not the morning.

I was on Lantus before I started pumping.
Whilst it is said Lantus does not last for 24 hours, it remains in your body at lower concentration for up to 4 days.
I was told to just miss my last night time Lantus dose completely.
My doses are quite small so this did not have a huge impact overnight. I woke a little higher than usual and corrected. I did not bother waking through the night.

In short, we all have different advice.

Okay, thank you everyone. I'm on Lantus but I'm on quite high doses. I won't skip it completely but I'll definitely hope it and hopefully overnight goes okay.

Hi @SamElliott1997 are they definitely starting you on insulin or on saline ?

Your DSN should of given you advice prior to tomorrow regarding what to do so if in doubt don’t do anything till you see your team tomorrow.
