Prediabetes Prediabetes Type2

I am type 1 but my 40 year old son who is not overweight and is fairly active has just come back from GP having been told that his HbA1c is 41 (prediabetes Type2). He has asked for advice but I don’t know what to advise, can anyone help with this?

Reduce the amount of potatoes, pasta, rice, pastry, cake, breakfast cereals and cut out sugary drinks should be all that's necessary for him.
