I was told by the doctor to get blood test for prediabetes so I did I bought a meter in a morning I’m usually around 7 mmol when I eat in 90 mins or so I’m around the 12 mmol I exercise usually can get it back to around 7. I been asked to go back for another bood test Do I eat before or not eat at all to do the test as it will read different. I not sure I heading type 1 or 2. Or this is normal

Do you know the name of the first test you had done to the actual results in numbers along with the unit of measurement not just a verbal summary in words like high low or normal? A quick call to your drs should be able to give you that information or tell you how to get it. It’s yours. You are entitled to it.

It was either an average of the last few months known as hb1ac taken from a blood draw or a moment in time/right now reading measuring blood glucose levels, either a blood draw or fingerprick test.

Fasting is not required for hb1ac. Blood glucose levels can be random or fasting but random is just that and will be hugely affected by what you’ve eaten.

As you’ve seen by testing before and after a meal bgl go up quickly and in your case I’d say that you ate more carbs than your body is currently able to deal with. In a perfect world you want a rise of no more than 2mmol and not to be going over 7.8mmol. Less is better for both. So you have goals now. As you’ve found out exercise is great for bringing levels back down but better not to go too high 8n the first place (although it can also depending on the person and activities temporarily raise them before then lowering them after for hours).

Do you know about low carb eating?
 
Oh and impossible for us to diagnose type 1 or 2, but type 2 is much more common and tends to creep up slowly (with prediabetes coming first). It tends to affect adults and often those who have gained weight. Type 1 classically happens much faster (though there is a slow onset type called LADA sometimes initially mistaken for type 2), more people are young and slim. But these are generalities and only testing can be sure. Slim active people can be type 2, larger older people can be type 1.

You’re getting readings of 12 on low carb? How low?
Perhaps we can make suggestions if you give examples of what you’re eating to give those higher numbers.

Hi Steveg1,
You ask if your finger prick BG levels are normal. Well we are all different, so there is really no such thing as normal. Many T2 members have got their Fasting BG down into the 4's or low 5's but this can take a long time (years). I personally have not seen any noticeable change in my Fasting BG levels, I am a Thin Outside Fat Inside (TOFI) and find that my typical post prandial BG is much reduced and my HbA1C has reduced from diabetic range to 'pre-diabetic, plus my weight has dropped by over 10% (unexpected by me since the most I have ever been is only 2lbs overweight).

I suggest that you do some research around these forums to find something that will work for you.

For me, I get no pleasure/satisfaction from exercise, so although I do a 30min brisk walk every day I take the view that 'you can't outrun a poor diet'. I don't go ultra Low Carb ( 20gns to 50gms of carbs per day), eat to my meter (avoid particular food items that I know will spike my BG), and will use Intermittent Fasting (for example skipping Breakfast) is my BG is 'too high ' i.e. nearing or above 7.8 prior to a scheduled meal.

But other approaches are known to work for other people.

Hi Steve, I would suggest you get a proper diagnosis and any test results back before you start worrying about low carbing etc. Low carbing may even mask any issues if you are still under observation by your Doctor. It can be dangerous to launch into a 'lifestyle' approach if you are right at the beginning of diagnosis which I assume you are? You say you don't know whether you are heading for type 1 or 2, it certainly is complicated but in my opinion you need the results of any tests first (these might even lead to other more definitive tests). x
 
Thanks for all the info I had hbac1 bloods done at the hospital awaiting results
