Prediabetes Prediabetic????

Hi. New to all of this. I am a serial kidney stone maker. I also suffer from neurological symptoms involving numbness to my extremities.
Around 18 months ago, during a kidney stone episode, I had an elevated blood glucose - possibly down to stress. Follow up fasting glucose and HbA1c came back normal.

Recent deterioration in nerve symptoms has made me wonder about glucose levels again. Bought meter to check for myself before going back to doctor. Started monitoring 3 days ago.

Day 1: Fasting Glucose 5.4 mmol. Yay!

Day 2: Decided to check again

Fasting Glucose 7.5 mmol? Immediate retest 8.7mmol?? 1 hour 6.9 mmol, 3 hours 5.3 mmol, 15 hours 5.5 mmol.
Ate very little in way of carbs.

Day 3: Hadn't slept well. Have a cold. Expected low result!

Fasting Glucose: 11.0 mmol?? Immediate retest 12.8 mmol??? 3 hours 6.3 mmol.

I am very confused - normal, prediabetic or just diabetic? Doing something wrong? I have read about morning surge due to hormone release. Any input very welcome.

Hi Ron,
How long has your neuropathy been around. If your glucose is persistently in the normal range ( I wouldn't call 11 and 12.8 normal though ) your nerve problems need a thorough assessment by a neurologist. Many things can cause this, including diabetes. Vasculitis and peripheral arterial disease are just a couple. Have you had a recent HbA1c test ? If you do see neurology they will order a whole bunch of blood tests looking for antibodies and inflammation markers. It would be no trouble to get the A1c at the same time.

Thanks for getting back to me. My peripheral numbness was attributed to a radiculopathy, as opposed to a neuropathy, over 20 years ago. Probably due to pressure on nerves from discs in my spine. I also had a gastric endoscope within the last year and bloods were taken then. Nothing flagged.

So it looks like the numbness is not related to diabetes. Therefore, the only definitive means available for possible diabetes is examination by a medical professional. Latest A1c would be a good start.

We can't possibly diagnose you. We aren't doctors, and the forum rules don't allow it.

As you are concerned, and showing some high numbers, you need to see your GP and ask for the diabetes tests.

Thanks. Yeah, I get that. I was really just looking to see if anyone had similar experiences. Also didn't want to waste doctor's time if these fluctuations are normal. However, better safe than sorry. Thanks again.

Two years ago I had a fasting bg of 11 as part of a wellman checkup. Subsequent tests according to my doc are normal, Hba1c just below pre-diabetic. However I took that as a warning that I am "on the borderline" of problems. For the last two years I have followed the LCHF way of eating and feel much better for it. I still test 3-5 times a day and my predicted Hba1c is 35 (from the calculator on this site and the Mysugr app). Don't ignore the warning signs, take control of your life!

If you don't know, try to find out what these levels were exactly while you are at the doctors. It will give you comparrison data for the new test results.
