Pregnancy: Unplanned little passenger onboard

Hi Lovlies,

I have just found out I am pregnant, I found out on Monday and am around 5- 6 weeks pregnant.
The baby is a complete miracle, as I also suffer from Polysistic ovaries and was taking the pill!

Unfortunately because the baby was unplanned my blood glucose has not been the best controlled. My last Hba1c taken around 3 weeks ago was 67. I know for pregnancy it should be around 48!

I am just wondering if any one has been in the same position as me? Cant see a diabetic midwife until my booking appointment which is the 15th of December.

You read so many horror stories I think I have panicked myself this morning - and the advice on the diabetes website doesn't cater for unplanned pregnancies only talks about women who have changed there readings before pregnancy.

Just looking for some advice from other diabetic women, I have been a type 1 diabetic for 15 years and now 27.

Cannot help you with your question, just wanted to say congratulations and as this little one has already fought several wars to get here, I think we have a fighter, all the best for the next 8 months.

Edited to add: (& speaking from experience.) the "unplanned" ones are always the best!
 
Congratulations @Toriroge

First things first - don't panic! There are other ladies here who had unexpected pregnancies and/or HbA1Cs a little higher than desired. The important thing is to concentrate on the present and keeping strict control now. You're still very early on

Secondly, are you taking the special high dose prescription only folic acid? If not, get some asap. Your GP should be able to prescribe it for you. if you need to, phone your DSN to get a prescription faxed through.

Finally, ignore the horror stories! All you need to concern yourself with is you and your baby. Keep tight control, eat well and rest and relax

Yes I have been prescribed the 5mg does of folic acid so taking that every morning.

Now you have every reason to eat well and stay in control. What joy.
I must warn you though that I ate freely of low carb foods throughout my first pregnancy and got a very active baby, over 9lb and grew like a weed - he's now 6ft 3 in and I can walk under his outstretched arm. Also his wife is constantly falling pregnant, so far has had to reorganise date of wedding and take finals exams for a law degree in imminent danger of going into labour.

Then you're doing well already - that folic acid is very important

While you're waiting for your appointment, look at your daily BS results and try to identify areas where you can tighten control. Spikes after meals are a good place to start usually.

Thanks for the advice azure. I do suffer from the dawn phenomenon so I wake up rather high each morning but generally okay throughout the day. Will start testing after eating to check on those spikes thanks for advice, looks like I need to dig out a glucose diary go start filling in!

Suffered 2 hypos last night, so will be keeping a eye on those too! X

Oh wow had to rearrange the wedding date! We got engaged in August lucky we booked wedding for August 2018. We now will have a extra guest at ours! Xx
 

Test lots and watch out for those hypos. They can be sudden. Keep Lucozade everywhere - literally. You may also find it helpful to set an alarm to test during the night. I got up at 2am every night, tested and ate or corrected as needed. It was helpful and reassured me too.
 
Il be taking some bottle in to work with my this week! I do have one in my locker. That's a good idea will have to start setting a nice early alarm x
 
Congratulations Toriroge! I'm currently trying to conceive and always find the forum great to help keep me on track. It's unbelievable the encouragement and motivation you take away from other people's stories! Happy and healthy 8 months to you, good luck in getting your a1c down (lots of testing!) and don't forget to update us on how you are getting on with your little bean! Xxx

I'm new to the forum- just read your original post, and it felt as though I were reading about myself! I found out last week I am 5/6 weeks pregnant, my latest Hba1c was also 67 (the last 3 were 60).

I've seen my diabetes specialist midwife today, who helped put my mind at ease a little, but I'm feeling anxious that I've caused, or am causing, my baby health issues. I too have read all the horror stories

I just wondered how you were finding things? I'm exhausted at the moment, and just want to sleep! Also struggling to hit the post meal targets.

Hi Fliss, don't read any more horror stories! I won't let my self and just think positive. How funny that we were in the same situation!

I have had my dating scan this week and everything looks fine! Baby was 13 weeks on Thursday the day we had scan and was just under 7cm just the right size for 13 weeks.

Has any one spoke to you about being put on the pump? I was being referred and had a appointment in Cambridge before I knew I was pregnant. But because I am pregnant they fast tracked me and was put on a pump the monday before Christmas! It seems to keep my sugars much more steady and you actually take less Insulin using the pump.
I really suffered with high blood sugars when I woke up in the mornings and often would be between 15 and 20!!! But the pump seems to be helping with my dawn phenomenon.

Like you I sometimes can't keep those post meal sugars in track. Have you spoke to a diatcian? I was told to eat 20g of carbs for breakfast so only 1 slice of toast but then you can have another one a hour later. Also was told to keep lunch and dinner under 70g of carbs - I have gone over that when eating out etc but trying to keep to it when I'm at home.

Yeah it's tiring making a tiny human isn't it! I'm still feeling tired now but apparently you get your energy back in 2nd trimester. How are you doing on the morning sickness side of things?? Xx
