Hello, I am thinking ahead because starting a family is on our radar.

I read that a pregnant type 1 will be prescribed with CGM. Is this the dexcom or the freestyle liner?

Also do they stop funding after the baby is born?

Thanks in advance

Hi Samantha,

I’m not sure what the guidance is for pregnant women, but the Freestyle Libre is becoming much more widely available. I’m male and have a Libre funded completely by the NHS. If you speak to your diabetes team then they may well be able to get you one in any case.

My understanding is, you will get the Freestyle Libre for the duration of your pregnancy. This is now in the guidelines.

If you don’t mind me asking, how did you manage to get one? Which criteria did you fill?

Thanks!

My consultant is applying for funding for me, he said the criteria was to be testing more than 8 times a day.
(I'm not pregnant or planning to be, btw!)

Yeah as Sleepster said, I had to be testing 8 times a day or more (I was already testing around 9–11 times a day). The Libre sensor costs your GP surgery about the same as 8 daily tests to prescribe.

Hi Samantha

I was pregnant last year and got the libre funded as a result - this was under criteria 2 of the guidelines. The funding was for 1 year where I live so covered the latter half of pregnancy and first few months after birth, so I still am wearing one now baby is here. I’m hoping to continue to get funding after my year runs out via some other criteria.

The criteria are here for reference:

I was seeing the antenatal diabetic consultant at the hospital, they wrote to my GP and told them to prescribe it. I then had to make an appointment at my GP and get them to add it to my repeat prescription list.
