Hi there, I have a 13 year old son with type 1 since he was 3. If I were to have another child would it have an increased risk of diabetes does anybody know? I also have a 15 year old son, is his risk also increased? Thanks

Most genetic responsibility for type ones lie with the father. Mothers can pass the trait on but it is less common. (3:1)The thing is that if it is the same father any future offspring of his has a much higher chance of developing type one diabetes than in the general population. The risk for another sibling being affected is 1:10-20

If you are very keen to have another baby there are a few other things to think about.

1. The baby still has a chance of not getting type one.
2. Life with type one is pretty bearable compared to many other things you could have (eg severe autism or Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy or cystic fibrosis)
3. With modern insulins, monitoring techniques and a restricted carb diet you can expect any baby to have a normal to near normal life expectancy even with diabetes.
4. There may be a cure during the baby's lifetime.
5. How would life be without a baby? Would you regret it?
6. What do Dad and your sons think?

Many kids would prefer a puppy over a sibling but even dogs and cats can get type one diabetes.

Thats interesting. No other type I's in my family before or since my diagnosis, I've been wondering who to blame

I didn't know that either! My partner has been blaming my family for causing my sons diabetes because my great grandmother had type 2 ( I know they're not related) yet his mother also has type 2. Wait until I tell him when he gets home! LOL

Thanks for that Katherine! I've gone off the idea now, I was just feeling broody the other day after seeing my friends new baby lol.

As for animals having diabetes, my grandad had a dog with diabetes which didn't develop until he was 13 but still cost him a fortune in vets bills. He was asked if he wanted him put to sleep but thankfully he didn't.

Just wondering if any other women have had children on this site.I had four sections in five years.I got type 1 when i was 17.married at 21 but had no children had all tests and doctors etc said i wasnt producing any eggs so was in and out of hospital for years on all kinds of fertility treatment then was told because of my diabetes i probably would never have children.Anyway to cut a long story short i divorced met someone else and ended up with four beautiful children.I didnt have any fertility treatment either.Had to go to hospital loads of times but got really well looked after and did have to spend a lot of time in hospital but it was worth it after having been told i probably would never have children!!I was told also that our children Have as much chance of getting diabetes as parents who are not diabetic.Well i was the only one in my family who is diabetic out of my grandparents greatgrandparents brothers and sisters. My kids are now 22 21 19 and 17 and are all very healthy and hope they stay that way.

Lovely!
I bet theyre great young people too!

They are but they dont think i have anything wrong with me!!They think i joke if i say someone pass me some lucozade or piece of choc etc if i am feeling a hypo coming on.Because i am the mum i think they think i cant ever be ill.Mind you i am never really they all have a meal ready when they come home from work and college everything is done for them washing cooking etc no wonder none of them want to leave home!!!They all bring their mates around so i can test their bloods and they all seem made up when i show them how to do a finger blood test.I think the only way ill get anything done for myself off them is to have to pretend i am sick(only joking).Even getting them to make a cup of tea for me is "mum youve done nothing all day i have been in work cant you make it yourself"
