Pregnant and petrified !!

Hi - Im a 25 year old type 1 Diabetes (IVE HAD IT FOR 13 YEARS) and quite poorly controlled (no matter how hard i try my blood is constantly between 7 and 11 some times going up to 14-17 ) and im also rhesus negative -
I feel very let down by my hospital as im now 11 weeks 5 days and still have no midwife and have and no Doctors appointments (due to the fact my stupid GP referred me to a normal Midwife and not a specialist one wont see the specialist diabetic midwife til the 7th August . I had a miscarrige last year at 11 weeks and again having had no support then i have NO IDEA what im supposed to be doing - everyday i think something bad will happen and il loose the baby - all ready had one bleed at 9 weeks and they said the baby was fine and had a good heartbeat ?! I just wanted to hear form other Type one pregnant women and what their experiences have been ! As im totally lost !

I'm not pregnant, but I am a grandmother and I'm so angry for you. This should NOT be happening. you should be categorised as having a "special baby" at the very least.
Try contacting your PCT.
If you feel bad or have another bleed. Get yourself to A&E immediately. If needs be call an ambulance.
Is your GP a single doctor practice?
If not try to see one of the others ASAP. Or ask to see the Midwife at the health centre. She should be able to pass you on to the right ones.
With all this stress, it isn't surprising your sugars are all over the place
I know it's difficult, but try to eat a sensible diet for a couple of days, keeping the carbs to a minimum and monitoring Bg frequently. If you see an improvement, it should help how you feel.
Is there someone? the baby's father ?perhaps, who can fight for your care with you?
If he's not good at that sort of thing get your own mother to help. I certainly would have done anything to help my daughter had, it been necessary, through her pregnancy
 
Hi, i'm not female and i won't try to understand your plight but just to throw my support in for you. Totally agree with hanadr, good solid information. Get your partner to help and throw his weight behind it.

Your treament is SO negligent, it's outrageous.
If I were you I would park myself at the Dr's until something is done.
 
I would be furious.

You should be classified as a high risk pregnancy, as during the last month, our hormones go haywire and it can be dangerous.
So usually type 1's are induced at around 37/38 weeks.
You need to see a diabetic midwife soon.
They really should be treating you better.
The most important thing at hte moment, is for you to relax. I know that seems impossible.
If you can, get your partner to yell, scream and poke the docs until you are seen.

I'm type 1, and i had a completely boring pregnancy and birth, the second time around.
6lb 9 daughter, who's 16 months old now and sleeping on the dog at the moment.... lol.
I lost my first daughter at 25 weeks.

For the moment, just try to relax and get yourself seen. Keep a good eye on your sugars.

WEll done Piskie, having such a little baby with your T1,You certainly kept under GOOD control. My non-diabetic daughter had my granddaughter a year ago, April, weighing 9lb 10oz.

I had a son 5 years ago who was 10lb 10oz.... I was not diabetic at the time (diagnosed T1 recently) and didn't get gestational. I was still swimming up to 60 lengths a week up til I had him, worked up to his due date and was very fit and healthy. The Drs missed the fact he was big and we both nearly died as a result, they blamed me being TOO fit and having stomach muscles which held him in!! I get upset when people assume large baby always means poor diet!! ( a bit like type 2's who are assumed to be overweight I guess!)Don't want to turn this thread in to a ranty thread but felt the need to point that out!

Also... completely agree.... fight for better care now! :evil: Far too important not to and loads of luck, please keep us posted.
 
Hi, I just want to lend my support. You should have a whole diabetic midwife team behind you. The day I got my test results from the hospital on my fasting glucose test I was referred and contact by my diabetic midwife. I met her very quickly, she showed me how to monitor my bloods, etc and I went to the obstetric diabetic clinic the next week and met my dietician and consultant. My midwife isnt' brilliant (that's another story) but without her and the rest of the team I'd be totally lost and mine is only gestational diabetes. Once the referral has gone through and your 'in the system' it shold be quite quick to get the right advice from the team, but your GP has majorly messed up. I would complain to the primary care trust and they should be able to speed things up for you.
 
Hi, this is absolutely disgraceful. When I was pregnant 8 years ago with my third child, a diabetes doc told me that a rise from 6 to 13 could result in a miscarriage,which terrified me at the time.Thankfully I was not on Lantus or Levemir, so had some stability on Insulatard. I was taken off Novorapid and put on to Humalog, as I was told that wasn't safe.
Are you taking Lantus or Levemir?

Also...and not dibaetes related...because you are Rhesus negative and had a bleed in this pregnancy it is ABSOLUTELY VITAL that you receive Anti-D now. Your GP should know this let alone your pre-natal team.
 
Thanks for all your lovely advice - its helping alot - in fact moreso then anything ive been advised of by doctors or nurses . Went to a Diabetes antenatal clinic yesterday that helped a little bit they advised me on ways to get my blood sugar under control and at different times to test etc . They didnt mention anythin though about the insuli i was on,

I also had my twelve week scan yestreday where i was tested for downs - On having my blood taken they then informed me i WASNT RHESUS NEGATIVE ??????? which is now got me even more confused - the lab guy said there is no record of this and has no idea why the doctor told me otherwise !???

I had my scan and saw my baby bouncing around he/she would not stay still the sonographer said it was a lil on the big side although everything looked normal - perfect heartbeat, apart from being a little big everythin was as it should have been i had a nuchal fold measurement taken and it was under the ammount associated with downs which was a relief - i was also told there was a prominent nasal bone and long limbs again all healthy non downs associated signs -then i receieved the blood tests result which told me the hormone which measures the risk of downs has placed me at 1 in 450 instead of 1 in 950 a normal rate for my age - again im confused and extremely worried im not sleeping at all at the mo and having terrible nightmares - I asked if being diabetic / taking insulin would have affected the rate and she said she didnt know has she hadnt had much experienece of that - i feel disheartened completely and am preying everythin will be ok - does anyone have any experience like this at there scans ?!!!!! xxx
 
Well the scan sounds great! I'm really pleased for you!!!

I wasn't diabetic when I had my son so can't help other than moral support but keep fighting for some specialist help!!

Hi, I just joined the forum today because I recently found out i'm pregnant, probably only 4 or 5 weeks gone. I thought I may get reassurance from you guys but having just discovered and read through this thread I'm even more freaked out now!
I take Novo Rapid AND Lantus....is there some problem with these insulins that i dont know about?
I was prescribed them in the UK but have since moved to Turkey and buy all my meds over the counter here so I haven't had any real medical attention for a couple of years.
My levels are reasonable and overall my control is good but if I should be changing insulins could someone tell me!

Some people don't get one with it.
Personally, i've used it for over 5 years now, including all through my pregnancy with my daughter. 16m/o now.
I've never had a problem with it, either of them actually.

If you haven't, then i really wouldn't worry, and i wouldn't change insulins right now.
I really would get a good work up asap though.
You really need to know what your hba1c is now you're pregnant, especially in the first trimester.

It's nothing to worry about at all.
There is simply a slightly higher chance of your baby having Down syndrome.

The website above has a description of all the prenatal tests for Down syndrome, and what they actually mean. At this point, the risk of you having an amnio, the invasive needle in stomach test, is a lot higher than your child's risk of having Down syndrome, so they don't reccomend it, as it can lead to miscarriage.
It sounds like your babies going to be fine, but i know how much i panicked.

Thankyou so much for all our support and thankyou so much for the website link ! i do feel much better now - just as all u pregnant ladies know out there its a very scary time on its own and thats without the added pressure of diabetes !!

Loud sally - ive never been told there was any problems using these particular insulins at any stage of my pregnancy so far and as ive said my blood CAN run quite high from time to time so if anything they would be more willing for me to try new insulins i would think - all you can do is eat healthy take your folic acid ( 5mg if Diabetic ive been told we need a higher dose ) and keep your blood under control as much as possibly can - and dont forget things like stress, dehydration and caffiene can also make your blood glucose level elevate so its not always a case of what you eat - do the best you can and thats all that can be expected xxx Good Luck to you
 
just to let u know i have booked to speak to a dr at the fetal medacine unit tommoro - just so they can explain things more to me !!! hopefully this, agin will help me cos i know i will be a nervous wreck for the next eight weeks ! ill keep ya posted xxxxx
 
I've not read the entire thread, so please excuse me if it's already been mentioned, but I would contact your PALS department if you feel you are receiving an inequality in, and/or poor service from your local trust.

The details of your PALS office will be listed on both your PCT's and local hospital's website.

As some of the previous posters have stated there may be problems for some people on various Insulins ?

This doesn't mean that you are going to have problems. Millions of users Worldwide use various Insulins with no problems at all, including the ones mentioned here. There are a small percentage who have problems and move to other Insulins. Don't 'freak out.'
Just keep it all in perspective.

I have three boys 16 years old 10lb 10 oz term, 3 1/2 year old 8.3 at planned 38 week delivery and 2 year old 3lb 6oz at 30 weeks.

Immediatly told by diabetic consultant who got me straight into the day centre unit for diabetics for which I attended weekly for check up.

I could also call my diabetic nurse at any time. I was on insultard and nova rapid. and it was a case of I just increased and increased and increased by dosage as the time went on.

Please enjoy your pregnancy but rather than go down the midwife route ring your diabetic unit and ask them. The midwife team knew nothing about diabetes for me which is why I went through the specialist diabetic unit who also look after pregnancy ladies.

as a diabetic lady you do have higher risk issues but then again so do so many other underlying issues. All my boys are super and fine.. .... just really look after yourself monitor your blood levels until your fingers are like little pin cushions and you could just about blow on them and they will give you some blood and you will be fine enjoy but be sensible

Can I just say though....Dont ever try being diabetic and pregnant in Turkey! The medical service here is superb...fantastic even..perhaps little too fantastic :?
I now have specialists coming out of my ears...plus is it normal to get an internal exam on your first appointment? I've heard it can be dangerous so i freaked out a bit and wouldn't let her near me!
And so it continues...tommorrow the diabetic specialist (at last) and next week an endocrinologist....seriously is there any need? They say it's because of the diabetes but I'm not sure if it's really necessary.
And one last thing, todays doctor (otherwise known as Uber Biatch of the Millenium) told me that Lantus is dangerous during pregnancy because it's a slow release and i'd be better on fast acting insulins, to which i replied...Duh...I also take Novo rapid!! (not in as many words admittedly!)
It really annoys me how doctors who know absolutely nothing about db have the gall to preach this ****** misinformation! The first doctor i went to after diagnosis told me NEVER under any circumstances to eat fruit...EVER...seriously!
OK, rant over...I'm not stressed, honest :shock:
