Morning all,
Looking for some advice - am now 19 weeks pregnant and up until now my control has been pretty good, last hba1c was 5.4.
I've had occasional highs but easily corrected and nothing above 10.
Yesterday the doc gave me antibiotics for a UTI ( my second in 6 weeks) and my blood sugar has gone nuts. Woke up to 6.8 despite going to bed on 5.4 and two hours after breakfast ( I also corrected my morning high at breakfast time) I'm at 11.4 . Totally freaking out. Normally I wake between late 4s or mid 5s and my sugar is almost always below 7 two hours after eating. Help!
Should I phone GDocs?
Thanks

Likely the infection is the cause of your elevated bg levels rather than the antibiotics, I'm going to tag @azure as she always gives excellent advice on these matters.

I would Google the actual name of the antibiotic and put alongside it "elevated blood sugar" or something similar. Some do, Some don't. Some can cause hypoglycaemia.

@asparagusp and @noblehead - thank you both, it could be the infection and I've looked up nitrofurantoin on the web and there's very little in elevated glucose levels. I tools correction dose, which worked a bit too well and I ended up having to correct as my blood sugar dropped to 3 . Seems to have stabilised now but waiting fir a call back

Cont..... Waiting for a call back from nhs 24. I havent taken any more antibiotics in the meantime just incase....

Apparently I have nothing to worry about, it might be the infection but I need to keep taking the antibiotics. He also said he'd be more worried about my hypo than going too high and more concerning was to have sugar in the 20s than the occasional early teens. Not convinced, but fair enough!

My experience of nhs is they are far more worried by any hypo than a hyper. Was recently hospitalised for an infection that needed IV antibiotics and took view that a few days of higher than usual but not extreme bg was better than a rampant infection that was probably cause of higher bg anyway. I may well be wrong but take the bus it's what you do most of the time that matters so try (usually unsuccessfully) to be chilled when things go awry. Hope things get sorted soon. Take care

Although 11 is higher than desired, please be assured that most pregnant ladies get higher numbers occasionally, even if they don't have an infection.

What I'd be asking about is if there's any reason for your two UTIs in a short time and if there's anything you can do to help stop them happening. I'm sure you're drinking enough water and your control sounds excellent, so it could just be one of those pregnancy things, but it's worth asking your OB next time you see them, and your midwife too. My midwife advised more careful emptying of the bladder can help. I'm a bit loathe to put the details here, but basically she said that sometimes a tiny amount of urine can remain behind even after you think you've finished. Another go can get that last bit out and help reduce any UTI issues.

I hope you're recovering well now.
