Pregnant..low carb?

Lisa23976

I don't have diabetes although obese and at risk of gestational diabetes given I'm pregnant (5 weeks).
I have recently been considering doing low carb. I want to be healthy during this preganacy (2nd) so question is what do I eat? Is low carb Ok???,

Hi, this is a very tricky answer, you will be getting morning sickness, so my advice is always just to get through that...
I just had a baby, I was low carb throughout the pregnancy, he is healthy and reaching mile stones etc.
He is the smallest baby I have ever had at 6lb 10.
I normally get gestational diabetes however this time I also had type 2. I would normally be on insulin and very high doses at that... low carbs meant I was able to stay diet only with very well controlled bloods (hence my small baby).
What they did do for me was to not do the gtt, I was allowed to just test and keep control his diet rather than mess it up with a huge sugar dose.
Some may say to just eat enough carbs to not be in ketosis (as they worry about the effects!) However there are conflicting tests on this... the ketosis in the tests is ketoacidosis and this is from extremely high blood sugars and not the same as being in a low carb diet.
There are risks to the baby with high blood sugars and I would say discuss it with the consultant and ask to see a dietitian.
Everyone's opinion varies depending on experience. If you need help do come and ask we are happy to help.

any very restrictive diet during pregnancy is a very bad idea. if your really set on doing a diet wait and breast feed and then start. unless your midwife says its fine dont. there is a risk of you getting diabetes but the risk to the baby is higher if you start dieting un safely.

however cutting all sugar and switching to non processed foods would not hurt and would lower any glucose loading without any risk.
