Prickly throat

I have been suffering type 2 diabetes for approximately 18 months and wonder whether anyone else suffers from a throat condition that is like needles sticking in the throat.
I find the only way of clearing this is by taking a cough sweet or a cup of tea.
Does anyone else experience this condition?

There are certain medications, not necessarily Diabetes related which have side effects that may be similar. What medication if any, are you taking ? We can check them out for you.

As this has been going on for so long have you discussed this with your GP ?

Hello Ken,
Apologies for late reply but thanks for your comments.
I have a history of increased medications over the past 25 years and list these below.
Alendronic acid tablets 70 mg (1 weekly)
Clopidogrel 75mg (1 daily)
Bendroflumethiazide 2.5 mg (1 daily)
Epilim 500mg (1 twice daily)
Tildiem La M/R capsules 200mg (1 twice daily)
Doxazosin Mesilate M/R tablets 8mg (1 twice daily)
Pravastatin 40mg (1 per day)
Salbutamol Inhaler
Metformin 500mg (1 twice daily)
Allopurinol 100mg (1 daily)
Telmisartan 80mg (1 daily)

As will be seen from these I suffered from a condition that was diagnosed as possible Epilepsy following two fits in 1995 and 1996. Hence the Epilim and this now seems well controlled.
I also have Emphysema, Osteoporosis,Hypertension, Diabetes, Compression fractures of the spine and a large Lipoma.
However, I am now 78 and I suppose I must be thankful to have made this age as all my friends have now passed on.

Do you think that the prickly throat is caused by nerve endings in the throat or must it be a medication. This has been a nuisance for approximately 8/9 months and drives you mad.
I had a similar reaction when working some 20 years ago when Captopril was found to be the culprit.
Best regards to you and all the good work done by Diabetes UK.
Geoff

Hi Geoff.

Sue is looking over your drugs and will give you a response later today......
So far there is more than one of your drugs which may be contributing to your problem. More later.

Ken.

Here are some side effects that MAY be contributing to your sore throat but you MUST go and discuss this with your GP. If you look at the patient information leaflets that come with your medication you will probably find the same information on them.

The info above comes from the BNF (The British National Formulary 59 ) which is the same reference book that the doctors use.

Clopidogrel 75mg (1 daily)

Hello Sue,
Thanks for your advices.
I recently saw a ENT consultant who said there was nothing amiss, following a camera down the throat. I presume that if my problem is caused by medications, it would not show up on camera?
Kind regards.

Well, if an ENT Consultant says it's OK down there then we cannot offer any further advice other than what has been given. They are the experts after all. We are just Diabetic's.

You could always ask for a second opinion.

To Sugarless Sue

Following your advices on my medications I am pleased to say that I am now free of the prickly throat and cough brought on by Telmisartan.
The crazy thing is that I was put on this medication last September as a replacement to Diovan.
Both these medications are Angiotensin 11 Receptor Blockers and I have now proved that these were the cause of my extreme discomfort.
I have been monitoring my blood pressure daily and there is little change from having removed this medication. I will of course have to consult with my GP.

Could you tell me please: does Metformin cause bad diorrhea as I have suffered this for the past two weeks; sometimes 2/3 times per day when I can defecate like a tap.
Thanks for all your advices Sue.
Very grateful

Metformin can cause diarrhoea in some people, sometimes it wears off. If it doesn't you may be able to get the Metformin SR from your GP which is easier on the stomach.
