Hi I was told I had type 2 last week have been told I can have 45mg carbs per meal and 2 15mg snacks a day I know this may seem a stupid but the diabetes doctor said I could eat what I wanted aslong as it was within my range .i have some mini twins in the cupboard which are 11 mg would they be ok or is it a big no no .also there are some small thin crust pizzas which are 42 mg would they be ok or really bad . Sorry if this is a daft question I'm still learning thanks.

its not your question thats daft, its your doctor

no these are not the kind of foods we should be eating, in fact they are exactly the kind of foods we shouldnt, sorry

if you like, eat them and test your blood to see what happens, if they dont push up your levels, then they are ok, but this is very very unlikely so you have to do this experiment while accepting high bloods for a while

edit: in fact dont eat te twix, take it back to the doctor and shove it where the shine dont shine, then you can experiment with the pizza

There are no daft questions only questions we don't know the answer to yet :)

It depends on how you plan to manage your T2. If you choose to low carb you may not want more than 30gms of carb a day but that's pretty low and is usually combined with High Fat (or Healthy Fat). There is a great forum on here called Low Carb Diet Forum where you can find out about Low Carbing. If you choose this path it's would be best to do it gradually though, it can take a bit of getting used to. I have around 70gms of carb a day, it suits me well and I feel great on that much. I know there are yet others who have around 120gms per day. It's all trial and error and "Eating To Your Meter". Do you have a meter? If you don't I would get one asap.

Do you have weight to lose as well? Whatever amount of carb you decide on, for me those foods in the pantry would go into the bin. Far as I can remember, a Twix has biscuit in it doesn't it? And the crust of a pizza however thin would spike my blood glucose. You will only know what food does you no good by testing. I tested a LOT when first diagnosed, not so much now because I know exactly what my body likes and doesn't like.

I am sorry to say that the medical profession has not clue 1 when it comes to carb intake for T2's. 45gms per meal? Hell, I would be in orbit by the end of the day! Cutting carbs is a golden rule for T2's and without it I would not have made the difference I have to my condition. However much you decide to cut is up to you but I am afraid that lowering your carb intake is really the only way.

Read all you can on here, there is a truckload of information to be had, experiment with your meter and make a plan then stick to it.

Good Luck jordansmum!

Hi jordansmum. The only way you can be sure is by using a BG monitor. If I ate that way my glucose level would be way worse than it is now.

First of all I think we are talking grammes here and not mg. You can get a lot of carbs for not much food if you are eating choccy bars and you may end up with feelings of hunger which will mean you have to eat something else as well.

The same applies to the pizza's and I doubt the quantity of carbs given since flour is worse than sugar for our purposes and a pizza has flour in it.

Most of us when we eat carbs make sure they have a low glycemic index/glycemic load. We find that twix, breads, etc cause a large spike in blood glucose levels. It is worth getting a meter and testing you bg levels when you eat things to determine what is good and what is not. We are all different and some can handle foods that others cannot.

I agree with the others. Welcome, first of all...

You need to get yourself a meter and check before you eat, and then check again two hours after the meal. This is a good guide to see what spikes your blood sugar. No matter what the doctor says... we should try and keep our blood sugars low-ish after a meal. If you eat the Twix or Pizza, check with the meter how high your levels go two hours after the meal. Only then can you make an informed choice of what is the right kind of food to eat.

There is plenty of advice in this forum. Plenty of knowledge and plenty of wisdom.

be careful with testing after pizza as the fat from the cheese may make you peak at 2 hours and not one so you need to test at 3 hours.

agreed, pizza is the weirdest food ive tested for, its worth eating just to see what it does, the spike lasts for hours and hours

I find something similar with rye bread. It keeps me up for hours (lol can I say that) at about 6.5

Thanks everyone I'm still getting used to everything have been testing myself my highest number so far has been 173 and my lowest 80.i have also lost a bit of weight since last Tuesday shoul have lost a stone by the end of the week.my mood is changing by the minute to they have got it wrong to super positive to deep depression .The thought of food is making me feel sick at the moment so I am eating very little worried that everything is going to hurt me . How soon is before the bad things start happening like kidney and eye problems.
Also started doing more exercise had a four mile work today probably not wise when it was over 80 outside.

Hi. You've already had a lot of good feedback. It was rather stupid of your GP to talk about number of gms/meal as meals aren't like that. The NHS likes to talk about having carbs with every meal but the main thing is to keep carbs sensibly low and not to just eat 'anything'. The GPs limit of 165 gm/day is a bit on the high side if you are trying to lose weight and blood sugar. Don't waste precious carb count on sugar-loaded foods; spend it on healthy low-GI carbs

Well said Andy, I could'nt have put it better myself.:joyful:

Hi there!
I would recommend low carb moderate to high fat. You have 2 types of energy source: fat or carb. Carb makes us diabetics sick as it turns to sugar in the stomach and then raises our blood sugar. Hence the metformin or other tablets. Fat is not harmful so you can therefore get your energy from good fats like dairy, eggs, meat and fish and by avoiding sugar, pasta, rice, potatoes and bread lower your carb intake. I am not a scientist so if I've misunderstood the science please correct me. If you try www.dietdoctor.com you'll get a better explanation. Hope this helps.

you have got yourself into a state, relax and take a breath. exercise 3x 30 minute walk a week
bad complications come when you have high uncontrolled levels for years, something that isn't going to be a big concern for you, because you are taking control of your diabetes
the thought of carb food should be not good, the thought of a big plate of green veg and meat with a chunk of butter should be good
have a look at the site scandi put up
