Hello all, especially all the ladies, Just a quick question if anyone has any insight. My 16 year old daughter has type 1, currently on MDM, but should be going onto a pump in the next couple of months, has ok control her last Hba1c was 58, not perfect but I feel not bad door a growing teenager

Her problem is her periods, she seems to be suffering from bad PMS, with symptoms including aniexty, unable to sleep, cries all the time in the few days leading up to and during her period, added to this she has really bad crammping and heavy bleeding for the first 3-4 days. The rest of the time she is a very happy and settled child. We have a GP appointment on wed to disscuss things, including starting her on the combined pill but have heard differing things regarding the safety of the contraceptive pill for diabetes

Any thoughts and expericiences very welcome , thanks in advance

Type of diabetes
Type 1
Treatment type
Insulin
Used to have all of that, with migraines to boot!

I came off the pill I was on and went on the contraceptive implant. BEST THING EVER! I understand at 16 contraception isn't the worry, but the implant is a slooooooow release of hormone much gentler on the body than any of the pills. After 3 months of having my period erratically they've been "stopped" for a year now. Ill have one again eventually, but this is perfectly normal for the implant. Maybe have a read up about Nexplanon and discuss it with your daughter?

Hey Shelly,

Sorry to hear your daughter suffers so much from PMS, I know the feeling myself. Emotions everywhere, cramps, lots of blood then during the period... just totally unfair!

I am eighteen and I'm type one and my diabetes consultant put me on a light contraceptive pill called Microlite, by Bayer.
It has virtually no effect on my blood glucose levels. The main thing is that it's reduced the pain SO MUCH. I can walk up the stairs now! :D I know that sounds so sad but it's great! I don't really feel any pain now during my period, just mild discomfort. It used to be so bad that I'd have to lie in bed groaning and feeling sorry for myself, desperately clutching a hot water bottle.

I'm sure if you mention your daughter is a type one diabetic they will prescribe something that will suit her.

Best of luck,

Izzy.
