Problems with hands & fingers

I have been type 1 for 28 years. I do not know whether my problem is diabetes related or not.
I have a pain in my fingers and cannot straighten them. My knuckles seem swollen to. There are raised areas on my palms and my fingers somtimes lock painfully in a bent position. I find that the application of heat eases the problem slightly.
I have googled the synptoms but cannot decide what is wrong.
Would appreciate any advice suggestions.

Re: Problems with hands & fingers

Hi there,

I too also suffer from slightly swollen hands and on occasion my little fingers lock in a bent position. It can be quite painful to release the locked joint. It mostly occurs first thing in the morning when I wake up. My hands will be swollen with my little fingers locked. Puffy eyes and headaches for most of the morning. It can take me until mid afternoon before i feel remotely human.

I have read many articles that make reference to this with some of them being:

Carpel Tunnel Syndrome

Serum Sickness

Rheumatoid Arthritis

The symptoms relating to serum sickness are the ones that mostly apply to me. This is basically an allergic reaction to a serum (insulin). The swollen hands, headaches, puffy eyes etc....

I have my medical review next week and will raise it with the Doctor. It may be that the nova rapid I use is having an adverse effect or my long lasting Lantus.

I am type 1 with a Hba1c of around 6.2.

Regards

JJ.

Hi wendy

I have been having lots of problems with my joints, especially the left ankle, knee, hands, wrists, even the hips. two fingers are slightly bent to the right, and I get swelling as well and red makings below some fingernails with raised bumps, but they are not sore. I have had lots of tests and RA and any other inflammation has come back negative. Just had an appointment with a Musculolskeletal unit but I have been referred back to my GP because it is now thought it could be neurological :?

The best thing is to see your GP and it helps me to write the symptoms down so I don't forget all of them. I'm Type 1 as well, 24 years.

Good luck RRB :)
