Problems with Metformin since Insulin used

Hi,
Don't know if anyone knows the answer :? I have been on Metformin for nearly 10 years with a dosage of 1gm twice daily. I have been on Lantus for nearly 4 months, and have steadily and progressively increased the unit dosage.

I have, over the past 6 weeks (without going into detail  ) had a very upset tummy about 3 - 4 times a day. My DNS,although does not think it is the Metformin, has decided, just to be sure, to put me onto a slow release Metformin as soon as my GP can issue the prescription, so we are probably talking about after Xmas.

Has anyone else had a problem with Metformin upsetting the stomach after such a long time? and/or after introducing Insulin into the mix? My Glucose is steadily on the climb again and I have had to up by 2 units today and the DNS has told me to up it again by another 2 units in two days. Then increase as I think needed

Just to finish off. I hope that everyone has an enjoyable christmas and a wonderful new year!!!

I am bumping up your post so more people can see it.

ive been on metformin since 2005 and i had problems starting at the end of last year, got put on sr metformin and the prob went away, went back on ordinary metformin in may and lasted about a month before the prob came back so it was back onto the sr metformin and touch wood been ok since

Hi, Yes since I have been on Metforming SR my tummy problems are a lot better, but I fear I now have a greater problem.

Since taking the Metformin SR (I started before xmas) my blood sugar levels are outrageous!! fasting or otherwise they have not gone below 11.5 mmol and the highest has been 18.3!!! I have been reasonable I think..in fact have not even eaten potatoes since xmas day!! I have literally been eating cold meats, home cooked ham, turkey...some cheeses one small slice of home made xmas cake....no mince pies....and up to 6 choccies a day has been my treat!!!nThe only major change is that I have had bacon & eggs every morning but should not affect my BG for 24 hrs!! I have been sooooo washed out and tired most of xmas. What is going on???? have a good new year everyone xxx

Hi Mervyn

Have you been put on the 500mg or 1g SR Metformin and are you taking them all at the same time? Just a thought if you are taking them all at the same time, split them to say breakfast and evening meal then you will always have "cover" as it were because my understanding is that they may not last as long in our systems - I am on SR 1g 2 daily which I do take as I have just suggested and I am also on Humalog 25 insulin.
You have made me think though because I suffer terribly with IBS and I would say that since I have been on insulin (12months) my IBS has been more unsettled and I am already on the SR tablets!!
It may also be that your body needs to get used to the change in the delivery of the Metformin. Try not to worry and just carry on with your normal diet.

Jude :)

Hi Jude,
I am on 1gm in the morning and 1grm in the evening. I am also on Lantus Insulin and today I started 100mg of Januvia. My DNS keeps talking about putting me on an insulin mix but nothing as yet.

My readings seem to be going up day by day...my fasting levels are now between 12 and 14 and my 2hr after meals are between 15 and 19.8. To say I feel washed out is an understatement.

My DNS said to give the Januvia 14 days and then phone her!!! :-(

This is all starting to get me really down now.

Anyway have a Great New Year :)
