Hi. I have not been on the site regularly for some time due problems with my transplanted kidney. Over the last few weeks, I've been in and out of hospital for tests, biopsies etc.and have had four separate and different aggressive infections due to my immuno-suppressants (to prevent rejection), but one of them has now been stopped to see if it will help my system fight back (but this, of course, makes rejection more possible). Three infections now gone but the biggest infection remains, and it is in the "new" kidney...so my function is dropping quickly as they try this drug and then that drug etc.

I am therefore...less than enthusiastic at the moment and have been less strict with my low carb diet and less focused on my diabetes in general. Obviously, the idea of my transplanted organ rejecting or failing is in my mind a good deal of the time, so I am what might be described as negatively preoccupied. Not sure I can deal with dialysis.

My reason for posting this is not to say "poor wee me" etc, but to point out that despite all the drugs and stress and ups and downs in regards to infections, my levels have been very good! Okay, I might bounce around a little if I eat some cereal or if I decide that I am too hacked off to care and end up eating a pizza or even a chocolate biscuit here and there (having been on a strict low carb diet - less than 50carbs a day maximum - for months) but my levels drop right down again to a 5.3 to 6.5 range a couple of hours afterwards. I know it's not ideal, and, if things go well for me I shall certainly tighten things up again. I thought sharing this info would stress that a low carb diet for so long has helped me stay way way below my initial levels (ie. 21mmols on diagnosis)...despite all the rubbish. I also wanted some people to know why I'm not online so much these days. Anyway - I thought it was worth mentioning as I had expected levels to jump right back up again with such poor attention to detail.

I would point out that my transplant was entirely unrelated to my diabetes (other than the fact that drugs for the transplant caused my diabetes!)

I am sorry to hear this pleinster, and I really hope they get the infection sorted, and your kidney is able to carry on.

Feeling the way that you do is pretty inevitable, in the circumstances, I would have thought, so congratulations on remaining as focussed as you have!

Wishing you all the best, and looking forward to seeing you back here regularly. :)

@pleinster - It's such a great shame that your great news about your body's apparent recovery to be able to deal with the carbs is tarnished with your struggle with your kidney.

I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you that your infections can be sorted and you'll be back to good health and function.

Keep us updated please and just come back when you feel able.

Good luck.
