I was just wondering which professionals you have involved as I read allot about specialists and doctors.

The only person I seem to have is the diabetic nurse. I don't seem to have a doctor, only saw the duty doctor who diagnosed me.

Does this sound about right?

As a Type2 it is usually left to your G.P. and Practice Nurse, unless they feel that there is a need to refer you.
If you attend a surgery then any Dr. can see you rather than a Doctor specialising in diabetes.

I've never seen a Nurse.

My diagnosis was givern to me by my GP, and my 3 month follow up in 2 weeks time is also with my GP.

Is a Diabetes Nurse more qualified to look after Diabetics than a run of the mill GP, ?

I have no idea.

I have never seen a doctor about my diabetes.

I was diagnosed following routine bloods on an annual MOT for the over 60's. The nurse called me in to give me the diagnosis, and all I have seen since is the nurse.

I see a diabetic nurse every 6 months for all the standard tests, weight, blood pressure, feet etc, and then a doctor every 12 months for a general discussion or changes in medication normally. I have seen a prescribing nurse once instead of a double appointment and a doctor for a 6th month appointment when I guess a nurse wasn't available or the doctor was new and training as more of a specialist. As long as I get the checks and treatment I feel I need I don't really mind who I see. Some times a nurse who sees a lot of diabetics can be better than a doctor who just sees them occasionally.

I was diagnosed by a random GP. saw the practise nurse a few days later, who recommended a low fat diet.

I went abroad for 4 months.

On return, met with the nurse replacing the previous one, who had retired. She weighed me (Healthy weight BMI), looked at my feet, commented on my suntan and told me to keep doing as I was - HbA1c 37 from 73.

I've had my retinopathy scans done, by someone from a central unit. Then, I have seen another GP a couple of times to discuss my lipids which superficially look high, but having educated her, she's very happy with them now. :)

In November I was removed from the Diabetes Register, but will continue to have annual HbA1cs, as I'll realistically always be at greater risk of a recurrence.

It's my condition. I'm happy to crack on and strangle it in my own sweet way. (Oh, and I'm better managing than being managed. Bossy old bat, moi? Oh yes.)

Ahhh thanks guys I wondered if I should have a doctor as well but don't really need one at the moment. My next test is in July and the results will be given to me by the nurse

Mrsmac your story sounds very familiar. I haven't seen my diabetic doctor for.my mot for almost 18 months now. Last time she was too busy with a trainee to see me. She's no use at all really. I get better results off diabetic nurse and more help/advice
