Has anyone had post prandial hyperglycaemia which has been attributed to continual Propranolol medication?
For a year since taking Lantus and just tested blood sugar levels once daily before breakfast. These readings have been good. However ten days ago suddenly a series of hypos which prompted a visit to the nurse. She advised halving my evening Cliclazide dosage and checking my blood post prandial which I do twice daily as well as fasting..
The first reading, a couple of days ago was great, 8.2., post dinner and the following morning, 6.4. Then two hours after breakfast in had shot up to 15.0.
Last night it was 15.2 post dinner and this morning fasting, 4.6
With that initial 8.2 reading I had forgotten to take Propranolol.
Dinner on the first day was a cheese salad. with a couple of oatcakes. Dinner on the second day was a chicken salad with a couple of oatcakes. Breakfast is always organic unsweetened cocoa made with organic milk and a couple of oatcakes.\
I refer you to The American Diabetes Association - "
β-blockers are thought to contribute to the development of hyperglycemia by impairing the release of insulin from the pancreatic β-cell.9 Interestingly, carvedilol and nebivolol are not associated with the development of hyperglycemia or new-onset diabetes.10–12"
I shall of course raise this with the nurse and/or my GP later today.

Thanks for your reply nosher8355. Oats! That really surprises me! I thought wheat was the guilty party!
Thanks Guys! I have spoken with my GP who wasn't aware of hyperglycaemia caused by Propranolol and indeed decreased urine output which I have noticed! It also masks the symptoms of hypoglycaemia. He agrees that it;s fine for me to come off it!
As for oats, the first post prandial reading of 8.2 was after a cheese salad and a couple of oatcakes. I don't think it's that but I'll keep that at the front of
Thanks again.
Cheese salad - cheese and mixed salad, no corn, no grated carrot, Just lettuce, tomato, cucumber, spring onion!
No drink other than water later!
However my teeth have been sore for a few days with two short bursts of the most excruciating pain a couple of days ago. Tonight a filling fell out so ,maybe the high readings have been constant rather than post prandial with the exception of the better fasting levels?
