Propranolol And Post Prandial Hyperglycemia

Has anyone had post prandial hyperglycaemia which has been attributed to continual Propranolol medication?

For a year since taking Lantus and just tested blood sugar levels once daily before breakfast. These readings have been good. However ten days ago suddenly a series of hypos which prompted a visit to the nurse. She advised halving my evening Cliclazide dosage and checking my blood post prandial which I do twice daily as well as fasting..

The first reading, a couple of days ago was great, 8.2., post dinner and the following morning, 6.4. Then two hours after breakfast in had shot up to 15.0.

Last night it was 15.2 post dinner and this morning fasting, 4.6

With that initial 8.2 reading I had forgotten to take Propranolol.

Dinner on the first day was a cheese salad. with a couple of oatcakes. Dinner on the second day was a chicken salad with a couple of oatcakes. Breakfast is always organic unsweetened cocoa made with organic milk and a couple of oatcakes.\

I refer you to The American Diabetes Association - "
β-blockers are thought to contribute to the development of hyperglycemia by impairing the release of insulin from the pancreatic β-cell.9 Interestingly, carvedilol and nebivolol are not associated with the development of hyperglycemia or new-onset diabetes.1012"

I shall of course raise this with the nurse and/or my GP later today.

Yes, I do think you need to speak to your GP rather than the nurse, the glicizide is working to produce more insulin to get rid of the glucose, hence the low figures.
However, if you as I suspect, your carb intake is too high, then your post prandial testing will be high. Oats are sometimes the cause for high spikes as a lot of diabetics have found out by eating porridge and oatcakes.
If you test, then you should be testing before meals and two hours after first bite.
That will give you more idea of what is going on.

I should also add that I had a short Glucagon test mid July and the three readings were high.

What is crazy I haven't to halve the Gliclazide at breakfast!

Yes, please speak to your GP about it. I know there are medications that increase blood sugar. I'm on baclofen which has that as a side effect. I've noticed actually since they pulled me off that drug and put me back on it last year that I've had sudden weight gain and my sugars have been higher too. But with me it is hard to tell for sure as I have other factors such as fluctuating pain levels and recurring infections to deal with. But it is always in the back of my mind just how much does my medication affect my BGL's? I'm on quite a few meds too. So I wouldn't be surprised if propranolol is affecting yours. At least your doc should be alerted to this and keep an eye on it. I wish you the best. :)

Thanks for your reply nosher8355. Oats! That really surprises me! I thought wheat was the guilty party!

Any grains can be intolerant!
As can starchy vegetables.

You have to experiment how much you can tolerate, you could eat half an oatcake and you may be okay.

Thanks Guys! I have spoken with my GP who wasn't aware of hyperglycaemia caused by Propranolol and indeed decreased urine output which I have noticed! It also masks the symptoms of hypoglycaemia. He agrees that it;s fine for me to come off it!

As for oats, the first post prandial reading of 8.2 was after a cheese salad and a couple of oatcakes. I don't think it's that but I'll keep that at the front of my mind!

Thanks again.

Thanks again.

What was your pre meal reading?
What was in the cheese salad?

This is how you eliminate the foods you can't tolerate.

Glad you got to speak to your GP!

No drink other than water later!

However my teeth have been sore for a few days with two short bursts of the most excruciating pain a couple of days ago. Tonight a filling fell out so ,maybe the high readings have been constant rather than post prandial with the exception of the better fasting levels?

Yeh pain definitely affects my sugar levels. Maybe it does the same for you. I hope your tooth pain eases up.

I also have had knee pain of and on since March and a husky cough for a few years .....

Last night, I dropped the nightly Propranolol and I had the same cheese salad as a couple of nights ago when the reading was 8.2 instead of 14.0 last night ..... I was relatively inactive physically yesterday. I tend to spend hours on the computer ..... So lesson to be learnt!

Add to the list of possible causes - my drugs for the thyroid, Carbimazole and Levothyroxine - "Levothyroxine can affect blood sugar and cause hyperglycaemia" from live strong.com.

My thyroid is now normal and I am still on the medication. My Endocrinologist is away on holiday for another week
