Hi everyone,

can someone please help?

I had a urine test sample taken a fair few days after receiving my HbA1c result.

GP phones me today telling me I have protein in my urine and it’s slightly higher than it should be- its 4.4 but should be under 3 and he wants me to take ramipril (BP medication I was told).

I refused to take metformin hoping low carb and fasting will help. In less than 10 days, I’ve got my morning levels to less than 5.5 and my after meals to less than 7 so going well.

on the day the urine sample was taken, I did exercise and I’m also drinking 4 litres of water daily. Could these have an effect on the result? I really don’t want to take medicines if I don’t have to

also does this protein issue improve with improving HbA1c results?

Is there a private blood test that I can have done which will get me an accurate function of my kidneys? If so, what is it called please?

thank you!

Hi same happened to me, they found protein in my urine I was put on ramapril. My next 3 monthly test after being on ramapril there was no protein in my urine also the test after that was clear too. I then asked if I can come off the ramapril and was told no as it is doing its job and if I stopped it would return. My levels are good too like yours in the 6s now, but one thing I have always had normal blood pressure and since being on ramapril my blood pressure is really low which I am not happy about and all they say is keep talking the ramapril if you feel dizzy with it sit down have water. If it goes any lower on my next 3 monthly check I am going to see if I can stop talking it.

Oh gosh sorry to hear it’s making you feel dizzy. This is another reason I don’t want to take it. I do so much exercise right now, I don’t want my pressure dropping

I know I would just have a word and see what they say, I honestly thought ramapril would just be a temporary measure and once levels were good etc I would be taken off it But seems after 3 clear 3 monthly checks with no protein in urine they are keeping me on it I am down to the 6s plenty of exercise and at my ideal weight. Good luck.

From the foregoing can one deduce that anyone to whom Ramipril is prescribed has protein in the urine? This writer has been on Ramipril 10mg daily for as long as he could remember. Cause both diabetes and high blood pressure are being managed. successfully,

I had much higher than normal protein last Christmas, but on a repeat test a few days later it was fine. The difference as far as I'm concerned was that the first sample wasn't into a sterile container, although it was thoroughly cleaned first (the surgery no longer give these out and say it doesn't matter what you provide your sample in)!! The second one was in the usual sterile test tube affair I'd bought. I'd suggest you ask if the test can be repeated.

Thank you so much, I jumped the gun a bit and ordered a kit online. I was too scared to ask my GP and I’m pretty sure they would have said no. I found an online test for £55. Hoping for a better result

I hope you get a better result as well. Must say my surgery are on the ball if any tests are abnormal, they always repeat them.

The term “new normal “
IMHO, make sure you’re well hydrated beforehand. BTW, I do take the meds (ace inhibitor) as my BP is slightly high. Supposedly helps protect the kidneys.

In addition to diabetes, I have CKD spilling protein in my urine. A non-test indication for me is that there is a lot of foam in the toilet bowl, after I have urinated.
