Protein shakes

Is it ok for type 1 diabetics to take on protein shakes? I need to sort my diet and have started weight training, I need to take in around 100-120g of protein but struggle through diet, one Shake a day is low carb and 20g, but I'm about to see the doc later as he wishes to discuss my urine sample, I'm assuming my body is not getting rid of protein and it's affecting my kidneys, I'm already on simvastatin and ramaprill, but admit I'm not the best when remembering to take them. But as I develop muscle and it requires protein to repair, will this help the kidneys out?

Hi,

I am not a Type 1 but I would wait before you increase your protein until you have heard what the Dr. has to say. Increasing protein if you have kidney damage can be dangerous. You could also ask his views about the shakes and any reasons why they would not be beneficial to you.

Very sensible advice! Increasing intake of proteins when you suspect kidney problems is not a good idea. Hope you are wrong about the kidneys though and it is just a false alarm.:-)
