Hi, I'm a type 1 diabetic and am currently trying to gain muscle mass, so I was wondering what the effects of protein shakes are for insulin dependents such as myself? Is it ok for type 1 diabetics to have protein shakes? Thanks.

Hi Phil and welcome to the forum.

I'll bump your post up to see if you can get a reply.

Hi Phil, honest answer is I don't know so I would try it and see how it affects your BG. Just treat it as an unknown meal. Test prior and after. Maybe someone else who has used them will offer more advice soon.

I've used them a few times, I think it depends on which one you use and whether you make it with milk or with water.
You can get low carb ones (I use this)
If you're using it before, during or after exercise then I would just take it as normal and see what happens with no insulin as the exercise will drop your bg anyway.
If not with exercise and you've made it with milk I would to an injection for the milk. It's hard to find out the nutritional values for these things!

This is just my opinion though, do what you think it right for you.

All the best

Hi Phil i am type 2 and use protein shakes from, my protein, and bulk powders, their websites will tell you there nutritional values and there are some low carb ones, they are cheaper than any of the high streets and are alot better in my opinion, i am sorry i cant help with the effects it will have on your blood i always mix with water and i have no problems. If you are trying to add muscle mass cut down on reps increase weight and train hard, look up a training program on the net called the 3x3 program this will give you massive gains in strength which will increase muscle mass but dont think it will happen overnight
