Hello there!

Just joined 3 minutes ago and wanted to say hello.

I was taken ill in March and it turned out to be a massive pulmonary embolism (blood clots on lungs), I have been told that this was from untreated type 1 diabetes turning my blood 'sticky'.

Has anyone else had any complications like this? Also wondered if anyone was on Warfarin at the same time as Insulin as it is playing with my mind!!! (I have absolutely no short term memory!)

Have a good evening!

Hi Phil,

I was in your situation, in March this year as well! I had been at the GP about a routine prescription and had mentioned that for the last week or so I'd been a bit breathless. A wee bit, going up stairs. He sent me down to the hospital and I was there for a week. I was diagnosed as Type 1, despite being 40 and a bit overweight, and told it had absolutely nothing to do with my breathlessness, it was pure coincidence that they had found the diabetes while looking at my blood. I had absolutely no symptoms. Overnight my calf swelled up hugely and a DVT was diagnosed, two clots had reached my lungs causing the lack of puff, but I had no other symptoms. As you can imagine it was all very confusing and alarming. I was on an insulin drip and started on heparin and warfarin. My blood sugars were highish (in the 10s) for about a month or so, and each time the team called, pretty much every weekday, they would ask, "Have you had a hypo yet?" I hadn't realised they were inevitable on insulin. I was barely mobile and had to take the bus a mere three stops to the GP every day for my INR to be checked. But once my leg improved and I could walk a bit, I started having hypos all the time, three/four a day. My nurse had been about to suggest changing my insulin from mixed and instead I got to stop taking it. I was really shocked to be told I must be Type 2 after all. I came off warfarin after the three month mark, glad to see the back of it, and now I'm just waiting for some blood tests results exploring what caused it all. But I was told the two problems were in no way connected...but it seems like a big coincidence.

Hope everything works out for you, this is a good site, folk are pretty knowledgeable and happy to share.
