Pump Criteria

Hello,

Whilst there is criteris laid down by NICE (the money saver). I feel sometimes the hospitals can be very negative and people find it difficult to even ask for one. You are within your rights to insist the hospital ask the PCT as its the PCT that fund the pumps (usually) not the hospital.
We have an 8 year old daughter who always achieved around 7% for her 3/12 test.We said are request was based on the quality of her life and also the quality of life for the whole family.
We got one, have never looked back, our quality of life has improved beyond belief!!!
I feel you have to develop thick skin and be able to smile sweetly agree with the Doctors, but insist they respect your wishes.

School were injecting, but now they operate the pump, initially only one Teaching assistant would inject, but since the pump, so many more teachers have watched and help operate it. They love it and can see the massive advantages. They even remove it when she goes swimming. Claudia attends a state school.

Claudia can also stay at her friends as parents don't seem to be as afraid of the pump.

Carb counting was a huge learning curb as was placing a cannula. We did it LoL
Claudia is a whizz on it.

Peace of mind as it can be locked and you can set limits.

We have have just asked for a constant sensor. fingers crossed.

Hi Angela,

Thanks for posting this, you've given me some faith back in the whole process. Not even sure who the PCT are but will google them soon as i've finished writing this. Won't go into my whole story - posted what was basically a big rant a few weeks ago (on another thread within the pump forum) and have had not a single reply!! Guess the brutally honest but negative approach really doesn't get you anywhere!

In a nutshell, i've been T1 for 19yrs and have never had good control - few months back was diagnosed with proliferative retinopathy and so decided my time of messin about is over. Have asked for a pump & found the consultant whilst being very nice about it has done everything he can to talk me out of it. The worst thing is that where i live we don't even have access to being put on DAFNE course - again down to the costs! I've agreed to try the principles of carb-counting for 6 weeks and then he'll discuss things with me again. Course i'll still be asking for a pump but obviously i'm going to have to become a philadelphia lawyer in the process!! In my humble opinion i'm an obvious candidate but he doesn't agree....

Hope all goes well with you and your daughter and thanks again for your positive story..... :)

this is great to read i have just asked for a pump for my 8 yr old son and been told to go on the dafne course in may (names on the list) then i need to go on 2 half day courses to learn how to use the pump i thought it was going to be a nightmare to ask and really had to pluck up the courage, i said would he be considered and she said yes no questions asked, we are already ticking off the conditions apparently so they may have been in the same minds anyway but its great news, i cant imagine dylans school injecting tho i got a job as a dinner lady at his school so i could do it lol i asked about blood testing once and they said they werent sure if they were allowed lol.

Hope u get ur pump eventually iklpixi
