pump insurance

I've heard people talking about pump insurance is it OK to just add it on your house contest as a high value item. or is it better to have a separate insurance just for the pump.
we all no what insurance company's are like for stitching people up and trying to not pay out.
 
I just added it to my house contents insurance policy as a named item. If you are in the UK most of the time, then house insurance should be ok. Try to make sure that you dont drop the pump down the loo or let a dog get hold of it and put teeth marks in the casing lol

I've yet to insure mine so was wondering this too. I've heard a few people mention this website : http://insurance4insulinpumps.co.uk and I got a quote which was quite low. Don't know if I should just go with them or try my home insurance?
 
Always try home insurance as a comparison. The principle of insuring many things at once vs insuring many things singly should make it cheaper in most cases.

Mine is insured on house contents ins for £17/year
 
I chose to buy separate insurance and not use the contents insurance route, as with specialist insurance you get replacement within 24 hours normally.
If you claim on your contents you would have to wait for them to pay up which will normally be weeks at best then purchase the replacement, or pay for a replacement yourself and them wait for the payout.
I use http://insurance4insulinpumps.co.uk/ and although haven't needed to make a claim, when I emailed to confirm the exact extent of cover the replied very quickly and answered any questions I had.
 
The simple solution is to make sure that you have it in writing from your ins company that they will replace pump within 24 hours problem solved. I certainly would not pay the ins premium that is wanted from your link.
 
Look at what the excess on your home insurance would be if you did have to make a claim. Might work out cheaper having a stand alone policy?
 
Also check if going for second insurance for pump that your home insurance allows you to have more than one policy on your contents. Its a long story but I had lots of problems over this, Insurance company would not cover pump so took out separate insurance then house insurance company cancelled my home insurance as I no longer complied with their terms and conditions (but never told me).
 
I have gone with the independant insurance company mentioned by Caryh too. Everything is laid out clearly and I'm covered on trips away; I was willing to pay for this and getting a like for like new pump next day seemed worth it. I realise I may be paying over the odds but it's one of those things - I've started with them and will now just stay with them.
 
Same as Riri and Caryh I pay separate as it would work out much cheaper should i have to claim.
 
I got the same one as Riri, Caryh and Engineer88. I've learned with insurance that you get what you pay for, and with such an important and specialist item I don't want to risk being left without it for the sake of a few pounds a month. I can't imagine a standard insurance company being able to organise a replacement pump within a day, or covering our pumps when we go on holiday etc. I think a claim would be hugely stressful when they don't even understand what an insulin pump is!

i'm thinking of just going back to my old injections making sure i have still got some spare pens etc in the fridge
 
I asked my nurse that, she said none of her patients have had to claim.

I'm going to continue to take syringes and a vial with me (as well as spare infusion set) if I'm going to be out of the house more than a few hours. If the pump stops working or the infusion set comes out or whatever, I don't want to be stranded with no way to take insulin.
 
i was hoping to go out with less kit but it looks like with a pump when you go out you have more kit.i don't drive so when i leave the house i'am like a mobile chemist shop .a big coats with lots of pockets.
i'am sure its all worth it
 
Yes caretaker, if pump fails or breaks you will need to go straight back to MDI as not many of us have the luxury of a back up pump at home. I also carry my injections with me if I'm away for the day, weekends away in UK on holidays etc. Medtronic offer a spare loan pump for holidays but you do need to book it with them 4-6 weeks in advance. Always check your pens on a regular basis to make sure they're within the use by date, I haven't had to claim on my pump insurance which is a good thing. It would be interesting to hear from someone who has had to claim and how they got on.
