Pumps and D.L.A?

There is a very strict set of circumstances to meet before you are entitled to support group esa and having diabetes and or a pump isn't one of them. As I understand it PIP or DLA is only for people with disabilities which affect their daily living. Mind you if you don't control your diabetes using a pump then it can be taken away from you.

I have Buerger's disease, I've been diagnosed this for about 2.5 years with the symptoms for 3.5 years. I'm 35. Last November I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.
Buerger's disease is a rare circulatory condition, one of the main symptoms is known as intermittent claudication. This means that when I try to walk even 20 meters my feet cramp up with a pain that can only be described as excruciating. I used to walk minimum of 15 miles a day before this.
The pain sets in doing routine stuff like tidying, washing dishes, laundry etc and is so bad I have to stop. I rarely go anywhere any more due to the crippling agony. My life in my eyes due to the Buerger's disease is essentially over. The best part is that no painkillers work to remove this pain. Not even the strongest opiates.
My type 1 diabetes is managed by novorapid & levemir which I administer via injections, I'm not brilliant at controlling my sugars but I am getting better with time. I feel I would never need a pump (but that is not an insult to those who do).
If I had JUST the diabetes, I would be able to work - just as many type 1's do. However due to the debilitating factors of my Buerger's disease I can't and have been forced to claim benefits to get by.
Type 1 diabetes is not a death sentence and there is nothing (except advanced complications) to stop you working. A previous poster advised a service for £19 but I feel this would not be suited to you as you are most obviously out to get whatever you can for free in life.
People like you make me sick. Why should you be entitled to benefits for wearing an insulin pump or injecting insulin??? How does that stop you working???
You need to take a long hard look at yourself because people like you are offensive to those of us who actually need these benefits.

I worked in the construction industry,firstly as a apprentice carpenter and joiner and latterly in a senior management,I have worked all over the world.I have had type1diabetes for over 50 years.I suggest you get off your backside an get to work!

I wasn't aware we were even illegible to claim. Mine stopped as soon as I hit 16 if I remember correctly! As I work I didn't think we could claim as we are "not dependant on another person" be interesting if anyone knows anything more!

As I understood it from the OP, she is already in receipt of DLA and ESA. The latter is awarded to those who the DWP have decided are incapable of work through physical or mental illness or a disability that require support to find work and successfully remain employed . This mostly necessitates a medical examination that determines what a person CAN do, not what they cannot. As I understand it, it is quite difficult to be awarded ESA unless there is a genuine need for it ( and often refused unfairly )

DLA is awarded to support a long term condition and or disability either physical or mental. Both are awarded at different levels according to severity.

That the OP has already been awarded both of these indicates that she has already been assessed and found to have conditions that make her incapable or have a limited capacity for work . She was asking if her pump affected the levels she already receives . Usually, but not always, diabetes of any type, whether you use insulin in any form is not a qualifier for either ESA or DLA as an adult, so her receipt of these benefits suggests another condition or conditions.

I gently suggest it is a tad harsh and judgemental to assume that the OP is apparently avoiding work on the basis of diabetes alone .

There is no automatic payment for pumps. PIP is based on things you can do (or not). If you can't manage a pump then why are you expectinng payment for not managing something that the vast majority of type 1's would do anything to get.. And do everything they can to manage their levels with pump.
A machine does not give you any further payment of DLA, and nor should it....

In some parts I would agree but how **** greedy do you have to be to try and get MORE money for a manageable illness. We already get free prescriptions ***.
