Query regarding insulin

Hi

Introduced myself to the forum a few days ago and I have a question that I am hoping someone may be able to answer or offer some advice.

I have been a diabetic for 30 years which has always been well controlled, until recently! My insulin is Insulatard pen for long acting and Novarapid pen for during the day. My query is, can one get a 'bad batch' of insulin?

For instance; my sugar was quite high this morning (12.9), as it has been for a couple of weeks. I've increased my Novarapid insulin but this doesn't seem to be helping as 3 hours after breakfast it is 18.1. I have spoken to my diabtic nurse and made a couple of changes with the insulatard but these have been no help. My husband came up with the idea that the insulin I have could be a bad batch so I opened another box, again this hasn't helped. One problem I do have is because I am living in France at the moment but still registered with my doctor in the UK, my medication is coming from there and I like to keep a good supply in stock. The dates on all the insulin I have is November 2011 so if there is a possibility of a bad batch it's possible that none of these are going to be any good.

Can anyone please advise if this 'bad batch' syndrome is possible.

Dear Elaine

Is there a batch number on the box? If there is and they are from the same batch then that could be the answer. But if they are from a different manufacturing batch then perhaps you need to speak to your doctor/nurse again.

Thanks for that suggestion Crystal Sue. Unfortunately, after checking, they don't have the same batch number. Back to the drawing board I think. Speaking to my nurse again on Monday.

If you don't get the help you need over the phone, you can for the time being use your EHIC for ongoing care in France.
(however, if you are living here on a permanent basis, I would urge you to get covered by the French system as soon as possible. It can cause serious problems if you need care and you find you aren't entitiled in either country)
