Hi,
I`ve been told from when I started being diabetic that I cant eat liver but now I hear that I can, anyone know which is true.

Hi graham
the only people who can't eat liver are peopel like me who are on warphin! Do you have warphin or taking asprin?
As liver contains vitamin k and that is not good for people who take warphin and asprin as clots the blood instead of the warphin and asprin that unclogs the blood!
only way i could think of expalining it other than that an
anyone can eat it far as i know!

I don't know whether this page has any bearing - but apparently warfarin users do need to take care of their vitamin K intake because it affects how effective the treatment is.

Regards, Tubs.

Copied from my inr book!

Vitamin K is known to decrease the effects of warfarin, and there are large amounts of vitamin K in such foods as liver, broccoli, brussels sprouts, and green leafy vegetables (e.g., spinach, Swiss chard, coriander, collards and cabbage).

This is where i get my info from! I have been on these pills for 14 years now! As far as i know there has been no changes i go to regular clinic every two weeks and not been told! This is the info that i was given at the start!
I always ask if anything has changed, the one time i decided to eat liver six months ago, i ended up with a two day stay in hospital as my blood went too thick and i nearly died!
as being on this drug for the amount of time i have been and i am on it for the rest of my life!

Hi sandy,
I know someone who had an embolism and was put on warfarin some years ago. You are quite right about the Vitamin K. You can have foods containing it but only at low levels. It is something that can be life threatening if you don't adhere to the diet restrictions you are given.
Regards,
Catherine.

Hi Catherine,
I have got used to what to avoid over the years! I cannot eat even a small amount of liver! It depends how bad it is! It is fun though in a weird sense when you have to ask in a resturant what is in the food!
I know i can get on the staff nerves as i have to and ask question's! but in a weird way i have to be careful because even a small amount can cause that! it is safe in little amounts for some people but not for me!
It is a shame as i used to like liver as a kid! Ahh those were the days!

I used to enjoy liver and bacon but even though im only on asprin i dont think i will bother.
Shame i loved it to, but i also enjoyed Kentucky fried chicken to and that went west for good, oh well.

KFC! Noooooooooooooooooooooooo! For the last ten years I have lived in a city that has resisted the onslaught of KFC, I have lived every day of those ten years in a state of permanent withdrawal from KFC. I had a Pavlovian response every time I saw a TV advert.

The day before I was diagnosed KFC announced they had submitted a planning application for a drive-in in this faithful city, the month after after I was diagnosed the application was granted, last month the store opened and I must live the rest of my life in constant withdrawal from KFC. I have to find some way to rid myself of the Pavlovian response every time they show an advert on the idiot box. :( :( :( :(

You could always hang about outside the store and sniff Tubs - that's low carb (Sue says so) :)

rephrasing slightly before someone points it out - I mean for Tubs to go outside kfc and sniff the kfc aroma not for other people to hang around outside the kfc and sniff Tubs

Although far be it from me to spoil anyones fun it's just not something I'd do :)

Hi Graham1441
I can't see any reason why you shouldn't eat liver if tyyou don't come in to the categories already mentioned
And Tubs
You could have a bit of the chicken, with no fries and no batter.
We had a KFC just up the road and Igot tired of picking their wrappers out of my hedge. they sent the dogs wild.

NO BATTER OR FRIES,
Just what is the point thats just chicken NOT Kentucky Fried Chicken.
Getting that and haveing to take the batter of oh no I just couldnt.

Oh yes...with a nice bottle of Chianti....

. . . . . and some fava beans!!

HA! KNEW I'd forgotten something....:) Are fava beans low carb? Come to that, what ARE fave beens? Fava than what?

Hi Grumpy,

Fava beans are what the Americans call broad beans. Not sure what the carb value is though. I seem to have mislaid my Collins Carb Counter book.

Fava beans are also known as broad beans. They are a good source of levodopa which is good for those of us who also have Parkinson's Disease - it is converted into dopamine.
