Hi All

Now 2 months into testing, and quite happy, average for 14 days now 6.3. However, I was wondering if I should test later than 2 hours.

Example. Last night I had a meal (Some beef wellington, some boiled new potatoes, plus vegetables), that was about 60g of carbs. Before my reading was 6.3, two hours later I was 5.9.

That all sounds good, and I went to bed happy. However, there was a nagging doubt that a peak could occur AFTER 2 hours. Is that possible, or should I stop worrying?

2 hours is the time you would be expected to be returning to your pre meal levels.

If I were you I'd be happy with it.

Great average btw

Caterham,
Great that your BGs are down to 6.3
I suggest :
1) Stop worrying :D
2) Try testing at times post 2 hrs for various foods, it's your body, you need to know how it deals with foods. fats and foods like pizza may cause peaks at longer times and knowing how you respond may help your control.
Good Luck

Any peak is likely to come before 2 hours not after. As Mary said, by 2 hours, you should be expecting to return to pre meal figures. With the meal you had I would have had a huge spike at 2 hours, but very well done, on eating amounts you know are safe for you.

Thanks for your quick replies. You are right, I should stop worrying!

I do occasionally test after 3 hours. About a week ago I had too much naan bread, and i was 9.5 after 2 hours (Highest I have had), but back to 6.3 after 3 hours. Won't be doing that again!

I have the Hbac1 this Wednesday, quite looking forward to getting the results next week. To me, this is a key benefit of testing yourself. On the previous 3-month test, before I had a meter, I was terrified that it would still be high and I would have to go on more drugs. This time, I am reasonably relaxed as I know I am generally in line.

Hi Caterham!

I frequently get a rise in BG at the 3 or 4 hour mark. It is doing my head in  So, yes, it can happen. I can be 5s pre-meal. 5s again 2 hours post meal and 7s or 8s at 4 hours. However, I am not Type 2 so will bow to the opinions of the other Type 2s as to whether this is likely for a Type 2, but it can certainly happen for an insulin dependent, low-carb LADA!

Time taken to digest different foods varies. Usual peak of blood glucose is actually at about 70 minutes after Starting a meal.

If you eat very few carbs and a lot of protein the spike can come at 3, 4 or even 5 hours later sometimes as protein turns to glucose very slowly.
