Question re Forxiga

Hi

I'm type 2 and on Metformin and Pioglitazone. along with diet and exercise. My latest readings are round the 9's.

I want to come off Pioglitazone because of all the associated problems of bladder cancer.

I am due a 6 monthly screening with my GP and was hoping to start on Forxiga. along with Metformin as a combination therapy/

Can any one let me know any pros and cons regarding this medication

Forxiga seems to be a fairly new medication. That is probably why you are not getting responses as not many people on here are on it.

It seems to work by removing sugar through your kidneys, so the downsides of it are urinary tract infections and thrush.

There was someone else on the forum that tried it but had to give it up due to chest pains. ( The search on here is not working.)

Have you looked at the newly diagnosed information that Daisy gives out? It might help you to lower your blood sugars as this drug does not seem to lower blood sugars significantly and there are loads of possible side effects.

I used to be on pioglitazone, and was also keen to get off it. After finding this forum I decided to go low carb. 5 months later I'D gone from 8.9 to around 6, if you look at my signature the correct numbers are there. That result meant no more pio. Since then ive also reduced my metformin to 1 a day.

Good luck whichever way you go.

I've been on forxiga for 4 months and my levels are good. Started off in the 20s and now I can eat anything and never go above 8. I am losing weight about half a stone so far, and apart from being knackered all the time ( don't think this is the drugs fault though as I have been like this for months)I have had no side affects. I am prone to utis and thrush and although these are listed as possible side affects I have had neither. I also take 2000mg metformin sr and these are fine too. I have only been diagnosed for 6 months,so I am a newbie and have no experience of other meds to compare it to ,but it seems to be doing the job for me so far. Hoping the weight loss stops soon as I don't want to lose any more but would be a great side affect if I needed it. I hope this helps. Amanda.

Amanda, if you are having unexplained tiredness then it could be one of the following:
1. Anaemia
2. Vitamin D deficiency
3. Vitamin B12 Deficiency
4. Underactive Thyroid
5. High blood sugar levels

Go back to your doc and get yourself tested for the first four.
 
Thank you so much Denise. I have been blaming it all on diabetes, but I think you are right my mum and nan both have b12 deficiency so guessing that is to blame. There are so many knowledgable ppl on here it's unbelievable , who needs doctors lol. Thank you again.

I have been on Forxiga for 8 months now.
It has been very effective for me.
I haven't suffered any side effects and none of the chest pains or thrush/urinary track infections.
This is surprising, as I normally seem to get all of the side effects listed!

I was on 5mg for four months. My results were good, however it was felt that they could be improved, so I am now on 10mg once a day.
My last HBA1c was good and I have lost weight too.

This is a relatively new drug and so like all drugs there may be a downside, but so far I haven't found any yet.
I am currently on 1000mg SR Metformin and 10mg Forxiga and Pravastatin once a day.

I have to order it in advance as it is not stocked by pharmacies in bulk as it is apparently a very expensive drug.
Boots takes two days to get it in for me. The pharmacist asked me about it the other day as she had not see it before. She was very interested in how it was performing and my experiences of it.
The downside has to be the need to rush to the loo at extremely short notice. :lol:
So a visit away from home normally has to be with a bit of forethought given to the location of nearby conveniences.
However, I have worked out that around 30 mins after eating or drinking a comfort break may be required!
Hopefully it may prove to be a good medication for you. I am happy with it so far.

Just to report in, and think I haven’t forgot to post after my appointment. My 6 monthly screening with my GP has been changed and my appointment is now Monday 25th November.

For info, my medication at present is

• Metformin 1000 mg (two per day)

• Omeprazole 40 mg per day

• Simvastatin 20 mg per day

• Losartan Potassium 50 mg per day

• Amlodipine 5 mg per day

• Pioglitazone 15 mg per day

I WILL report back following my appointment.

Had the 6 monthly screening with the GP, and he was quite pleased.

I explained about my concerns with the Pioglitazone and bladder cancer. I also reminded him that I am a retired fire-fighter and there are several global reports circulating about “firefighters and bladder cancer”.

He agreed that it was right for me to come off the Pioglitazone. .

I then put a proposal to him for me to go on to Forxiga, told him I had done a little research, and he was pleased that I have taken possession of my problem.

He said it was a fairly new drug and he only prescribed a couple of times. I could tell this as he wrote the prescription as he couldn't spell it, and we had a chuckle about that. He agreed for me to start taking the Forxiga (10 mg per day) immediately.

My bloods were a reading of 51 (in new money),

He wants me to go back for a blood test in 3 months, and see him for the results.

So fingers crossed, and I’ll report back with any information.

Hi

Been on Forxiga for 4 weeks now.

Bloods are good, readings between 6.8 and 5.7 (sorry, old money !) Didn't know the meter read that low !!

And lost 5 lbs, and ate like a trooper over Christmas !

No side effects, and feeling great.

Will report as more transpires, or at least following my follow up, now in 2 months

Been on Forxiga for just over 3 months and it's really working well.

I've lost 7 lbs and had NO side effects.

been to see GP (after 3 months) and he is very pleased. Bloods were 49 (in new money), before I went on Forxiga it was 51

He doesn't want to see me for 6 months

Foxiga is a miracle for me. My bloods were between 13-17 (old money) and have dropped all the way down to 6.1.
No side effects that I have noticed except a few more trips to the loo. I have lost 6kg (just short of a stone) in 6 weeks

My other medications are:
Metformin Hydrocloride Tablets 500mg
Simvastatin 20mg
Fluoxetine Hydrocloride Capsules 20mg
Victoza 18mg/ml Liraglutide
Lansoprosole Capsules (Gastro-Resistant) 30mg

Good stuff
